Research Update:

ACCESSORIES- I keep flipping back and forth.. grrr! This accessory thing is a real PITA. (mainly because of the cost). Here's how it looks to me to convert a GTO LS2 to CTS-V spec:

$186 New Waterpump 06 CTS-V [GM @ GMPD]
$45 Buy C5 Harmonic (used C5/C6/CTS-V @ LS1Tech)
Sell GTO WP
Sell GTO Harmonic
$230 minus old parts being sold

Then there are two main options for the rest:

Option 1 - GMPP kit
$775 Buy GMPP 19155066 (GMPD)
$23 Buy 15306009 (PT1136) Alt wiring connector
$12 Buy 88953303 (PT1511) AC wiring connector
Sell GMPP PS + bracket
Sell GTO Alt + bracket
Sell GTO PS + bracket
Sell GTO AC + bracket
$810 minus old parts being sold

Option 2 - Modified GTO + CTS AC:
$354 Buy CTS AC Denso 10S17F (GMPD)
$30 Buy CTS AC bracket (GMPD)
$68 Buy CTS AC Tensioner
$12 Buy 88953303 (PT1511) AC wiring connector
$56 Buy CTS Serp Tensioner
$50 Modify GTO Alt bracket
Sell GTO PS + bracket
Sell GTO AC + bracket
$570 minus old parts being sold

I think once you factor in the parts being sold it's close to a wash (and any additional cost over option 2 buys you all new stuff).. so... I think the kit is still my answer. Need to get all the pieces printed to take to Berger so they can price match.

Build Update:

PARTS RECEIVED - 3rd box from FM arrived, still haven't opened them (busy busy!). Received the T56 "offset lever" from thegearbox (ordered one afternoon, had the next morning.. nice!)

PARTS BOUGHT - bought used LS2 crank pulley with 15k miles on it. Ships tomorrow should have next week.

PARTS IN PROCESS - V8R building my parts this week, estimated shipping sometime later next week which should put it here in time for the holiday break.

Default Fuel System research

3rd December 2010 17:06
________________________________________

Research Progress:

Fuel System - Found this handly PDF that shows all the Dorman parts you may need for non-AN fitting distribution:

http://www.dormanproducts.com/docume...uyersGuide.pdf

This thread discusses the AN stuff:

Russell 640940 AN to quick release adapter source!! - LS1TECH

which has this nice drawing:

Russell 640940 AN to quick release adapter source!! - LS1TECH

I won't be doing AN fittings, I am going to go the much more affordable factory nylon stuff (same as I did on the LT1 RX7, which worked awesome and looks factory.. plus I have some left over parts that I can use) but it gives you an idea of how to do it. I'll detail out the nylon setup once I get it done.

Default Clutch System

7th December 2010 14:57
________________________________________

Research Update

Clutch - Done some searching, and haven't found anything.. can the Wilwood clutch master mate up with the Miata clutch pedal without a custom attachment?

i.e. does the Wilwood master thread into the stock Mazda clevis-thing that hooks to the pedal, or do I need an aftermarket part there? I ended up welding a custom one for the RX7 (found a metric nut and welded it on to the stock clevis-thing), since it was threaded differently than the master but I can't find if the Miata is different.

The rest of the system I have sorted out, me thinks:

$67 Clutch Master - Wilwood 3/4"
$14 GM clutch line adapter (GM to -3AN) - Russell 640821
$13 Clutch Line - Stainless -3AN, length to fit (probably 36")
$30 T56 remote bleeder line - 48" long
$10 Brake line tabs (for holding the remote bleed line somewhere securely)

$134 Total plus shipping (all speedwaymotors.com)

Build Progress:

Organization - Spent my hours sitting in various airports over the last 3 days creating a master "To Do" list.. hits all the major points of what needs to be done, and it is bloody long. It should help me to keep organized on the sequencing of tasks, and keep track of things that were started but not finished. Most certainly a living document. It did this on the RX7 and it was helpful for watching progress, and for those "Oh, I gotta add this to the list" moments. Plus, as you walk through the job in your mind you think of small details that will screw with schedule, like I have the oil pan, but forgot to order the remote oil filter line fittings!

Parts Shipped - Another box coming out of FM, and V8R may ship today/tomorrow.

Parts Received - Crank pulley arrived, B&M shifter arrived.

Disassembly - Wow, 7 years of ownership and mods.. what a rats-nest under the dash .. so many wires intertwined that I ended up just randomly cutting things to get the dash out. I forgot how much crap I stuffed under there:

Remote start/keyless entry/alarm
Mini siren for the alarm
Eight 30amp relays (plus 2 more in the console)
Link ECU switcher box
Link ECU datalogger box
Goodson idiot light controller box
Autometer FP gauge controller box
Radar sensor for alarm in the console
Impact for alarm

I'll post up some photos later tonight, it's probably quite comical when you aren't the poor guy trying to get the dash to come free! . Seats and dash are out, though!

Next up: HVAC and AC crap.

Instead, I pulled up the carpet to the dash and did most of the floor pan; none of the firewall. :O So, hats off to you. Good time to clean all of that up.

Wait till you see it! You know me, always ready to whip out more wires and a solder iron. And believe me, it shows. I just cut 90% of it off, the big trick will be making sure the car will run after I finish. The only stuff that goes back in is alarm related, and I am doing a new one anyhow so it all had to be reworked regardless. I plan to run VDO gauges and true idiot light senders (same scenario as the RX7) so all old that garbage goes, too.

Build Progress:

Disassembly - Heater core, AC core, blower motor and 90% of Wally-nest removed. Hope to get the carpet out before calling it a day, been at it for 5.5 hours and I need to get some "real life" stuff done today too.

Parts Arrival - Got all the GMPP parts (19155066 kit, CTS-V WP and 2 wiring plugs) from Berger Chevy, and 3 large and heavy boxes arrived from V8R.. woohoo! Opened the subframe just to check it out, assuming the other boxes are a driveshaft and a couple of axles with hubs, but not sure yet.. will open them up tonight.

Parts Update - Frame rails and clutch master adapter should ship this week, oil pan should ship next week.

Also, been chasing a busted coil and some missing parts from the pullout I bought (yes, for almost 2 months). Final answer is "buy what you need at the dealer, fax us the receipt and we'll credit you back". So, have to run over to Berger and order up some parts.. The yard is standing behind the sale, so that is nice. Looks like about $450 in parts, ouch!

Parts Arrival - Another box from Flyin Miata. Radiator, radiator hoses, some hose kits, all kinds of little odds-n-ends. I hope to inspect everything tonight and get some photos up.

Clutch Hydraulics - Finally dug out my spare parts - no go, it's a 1" master. So ordered up the remainder from V8R since they had to ship me the oil pan anyhow, tossing it in that box. Was hoping to reuse stuff I have around the garage but no such luck. Figured this is a "buy it and forget it" opportunity.

Sounds like the remainder of the parts on order will arive this week, which is good.

On vacation the next 2 weeks, trying to capitalize on some holiday time coupled with the vacation to get 16 days off in a row. Hope to get some significant progress done in between visiting the GFs family in Canada and various other holiday obligations.

Engine Bay Cleanout - Everything removed from engine bay except brake master/booster/lines, clutch master/line, and the two wiring harnesses. Everything is pulled loose, tomorrow plan to designate and cut out all wiring no longer needed. Will attempt to start at Link ECU and salvage entire harness to be sold with engine.

Additional Parts - Considering buying a brake proportioning valve, the FM BBK is nice but I think it could use some additional balancing... open to suggestions/opinions on the matter.

Build Update:

Body Prep -

Engine bay completely empty.
Every grommet, wire tie, and rubber plug removed from engine bay.
Lower radiator mounts removed.
Sway bar mounts removed (the passenger one was cracked, I always had a 'popping' on track under hard cornering, now I know why)
Clutch master, brake master and booster removed.
Fuel tank removed.
All brake lines and fuel lines removed.
Fuel pump and filter removed (pulled lines as a complete unit).
Engine/dash wiring harness is out.
Driving lights and horns removed.
Front bumper removed.

Wiring removal wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Next up for wiring is to thin it out, plus add back wiring that will be needed for gauges. Trouble is, not sure which side gets them yet so can't really do much there until the senders are on the motor. So, kind of at a stand still there since I don't have any of the sending units ordered yet.. not sure all the gauges are going to fit in the cluster. Might look at that tonight.

Still going round and round with the junkyard. I went ahead and bought the $430+ worth of parts at the dealer as instructed, and now (surprise!) the refund is taking a long time (because, you know, issuing a refund with ebay and paypal is such a process.. why, it takes about 10 mouse clicks! And then the waiting for the electrons to make it to the servers, milliseconds!). What a PITA. Moral of the story, kids, is dispute payment the second you see an issue, and don't expect anyone to give anything but lip service. Hold $5775 and they will be slightly more agreeable. I suspect in the end I will get my refund for the parts I had to replace, but good grief... it could be simplier and less painful and a helluva lot faster. Bought it October 28, and here we are 55 days later still dicking around with it.

So, the shell is 99% gutted. Next up is pulling firewall insulation & tunnel insulation, and then cutting things. Woot!
