Which module with Duraspark
So looking over the "Duraspark" distributors and various module, I am having some problem correlating which units go together. Any of you that are using the Duraspark can you let me know so that I can make the right order.
Thanks, Fred
Does this sound correct as an alternative

Just to clarify you are looking for the Duraspark controller that was used just after points 1976 but just before fuel injection in 1986. The one I use in my race care with a carb is the same unit that would be found in a 83 - 85 - 302 mustang. The early models have an extra wire to sense when you engage the starter,( why I mention 83-85) but otherwise they are the same. You will also need the right distributor as well, the TFI unit with the 86 and up fuelie cars won't work. look for a distributor with a vacuum advance,(unless marine), and you may have to throw a curve kit to it to limit total advance if your engine is stout. Also 351 and 302 distributors won't interchange, 351 has a longer and stouter shaft, also make sure if using with a roller cam the you use a steel drive gear or failure will come in short order. Hope this helps some.

I agree with using the MSD controller, gives you a rev limiter, better timing adjustment and of course hi energy multiple spark discharge and mine gives me timing retard when I hit the NO2, ZOOM ZOOM.

Personal experience with the duraspark ignition was great. I only upgraded to the MSD later to try and get more outta my engine when on the laughing gas. Using a 300HP hit meant I had to roll the timing back to 8 degrees initial and disconnect the vacuum advance with the duraspark. I take the motor to 8500RPM and to be fair the duraspark never missed a beat, gets me down the 1/8th mile in 8.60 seconds, (full cage 79 stang 10" drag radials). Same unit out of my 79 car was still working fine when removed 2 years ago. I admit the MSD is nicer with launch control, NO2 timing retard, rev limit chip and so on. Adding the MSD only gave me an extra 10th in the 1/8th so I dial in at 8.50 now and seem to beat the old gurl twice as hard.... was it worth the 10th?? your call. Don't discount the duraspark unit, as long as you can work with its factory limitations, it will light the fire.

Duraspark Pics
First Pic is the Duraspark unit that was in my car.
Typical Duraspark Set up, notice small black cap and vacuum advance
302 Left 351 Right
Typical Fuelie TFI cap, gray and larger diameter, small secret to using them with a High Output Ignition Box, throw away the stock Ford rubber cover, it won't let the Ozone out of the cap and can cause spark scatter, had it happen to me and had an NO2 backfire that confettied my air cleaner and popped my vacuum assist valve, lesson learned, did get points for rolling across the start line. LOL.
Left - TFI inside Right - Duraspark inside
Hope this helps solve any confusion, as to the High Output box, just look for the one with the features you want, how far can you open that wallet?? Most of this info comes from personal experience, take it for what it's worth.
Keep moving forward

Being a closet street racer and avid Friday night instant green,( No Yellow on Tree), racer at our local track, I should say stock appearing, LOL. MY BAD!!
79 'stang, stripped of everything not needed, no wiper motor, no heater box or plumbing, all seams welded, 6 pt cage, seats look stock but are carbon fiber internals,( I do work in a p1 race boat shop after all), carpet on floor is very light too, plastic headlamps, 4 Cylinder K-member, ( all mods recommended in "Mustang Performance Handbook" 1 + 2) performed on chassis and engine. Engine moved back 2", front wheels pushed forward 1", modified four link setup.
Drive train, as I said stock appearing, Torker II intake, ( painted to look stockish) and 650 double pumper,(ported slightly 700 cfm), covered with a big low clearance chrome air filter, Iron E7TE heads ported to the maximum,( thanks Chris Ross of Precision Porting), 2.02 int 1.60 exh, port matched, 1.73 rockers with stud girdle, Crane 292 cam. Long tube Hooker Headers, Stock Roller Block bored 0.040 over, stroked .25" Scat Crank (335 CI), Scat Rods, Probe forged flat tops, Main lower girdle, Stock looking pan with cooling holes placed in bottom. few other secret details.
Center force clutch, 69 big block top loader 4 speed with T5 shift ****, aluminum drive shaft (painted), 3.73 8.8 with locker and bearing support. stock hood with 2.5" cowl lift all painted Purple Haze,( purple with red pearl in clear).
I am sure I forgot many other details but to be honest when I first put the car together 10 years ago she only ran an 8.95, I have come a long way in 10 years of tuning and perfecting my program. One big gain was the big block top loader, a bit heavier than the T5 I had and broke twice, but first gear is a lot lower so it seems like I have 4.11's on launch.
I recently sold the old gurl as I haven't had her to the track in two years and I wanted to start a new sleeper,( Miata project). I kinda lost interest when I could no longer find anybody that would race me, guess the purple is too recognizable and 10 years same car a guy gets known.
On that note I did run the stock duraspark ignition and Accel Super Coil with the above set up and she never failed me. I switched to the MSD so I could get launch control and Rev limiter as missing a shift on the bottle sucks, even with a rev limiter, things can still be tense.
On the laughing gas I also have a second 2 gallon fuel cell with Late Model 110 Octane that helps with detonation, something I added with the MSD as I was worried the duraspark would not light the fire, also NO2 sneezes really suck, although a huge crowd pleaser.
I will try and find a few pics and post my time slips as, no pics it never happened, I understand.
First run down the track, 8.95 at 96MPH ... had a T5 back then... July 2002
That's me standing behind car, Had a driver for rounds
Can't seem to find any time slips. but looks fairly stock, just another fox body... I even left the stock slapper bars to help with the image. Also that 8.50 is at 2500 ft, she pulls much better at sea level. HEHE
