Default Air filter size

Just curious. The previous owner had a tiny air filter on the car. It is so small I wouldn't even consider putting it on a 90hp Honda. In fact, I would bet that it may not even have the same surface area as a stock filter. That being said, it doesn't look like there is room for anything larger. Although looking through the member gallery, everyone is running a much larger filter. Any thoughts? Here is the best pic I have right now. I am guessing that just making a new intake piece that is angled out more towards the fender would solve the space problem.

I have a large K&N filter mounted behind the front bumper. It is about 12" long & 6" diameter mounted to a 3.5" duct. It lowered my intake air temps. a lot.

Cool. So I can make an extension pipe from the maf and fit the larger filter in the fender/bumper area? Any pics of your setup, or where the pipe passes through? I assume I need to cut a hole.

There are some half-assed pictures here: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/288493...ta-mx-5/page-6 . In the last picture, you can barely see where the intake hose passes through the fender apron under the headlights. I used a combination of 3.5" flex duct http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/ceet.php, silicon elbows http://www.siliconeintakes.com/, & 3.5" exhaust tubing. Sorry that I did not get more pictures of the actual "build". I did not get a digital camera until after I finished.
