Gas tank cleanup
I pulled the fuel pump assembly to change the loud obnoxious fuel pump on my 1990 5.0 (turned out to be a Walbro 255 and it seems louder than any other Walbro 255 that I've ever heard) and found a slight coating of surface rust and a substance that resembles coffee grounds in the bottom of the tank. I've cleaned most of it up but I'm looking for any additional advice for final cleanup and a possible explanation of what that stuff is. The tank has been drained and I'm wondering how much further I need to go with this. I was going to blow out the 2 fuel lines and I guess I will need to pull the injectors and make sure they are not plugged. Yes, it has been running like crap. The car is a 90 and I ordered a DW200 to replace it. The replacement install kit did not include the items that I needed. I have since figured out that the tank had probably been upgraded to a 1.8 tank. Long story short I probably should have ordered a kit for a 1994. The big rubber band was not included or even installed on the pump that I removed. Do I need this Item? I can't see that it does much. All suggestions welcomed. Thank you in advance.- Brad

Hi Brad,
There is an epoxy coating that can be used on metal tanks to restore the surface if they have been attacked by rust.
