Looking for a 7.5 or 8.8 rear differential for a ford 5.0 build I have search locally with no luck. What is the going price for a used differential?

I just pulled a 8.8 from a 92 Cougar, I know the owner and he gave it to me but I had been looking and in my area they can be found on Craigslist for around $100 the local junk yards are asking closer to $300.

I thought $450.00 was a little high.

car-part.com has lots of them listed. Recently I found a 3.27 posi 8.8 for $138 shipped but didn't buy it. The yard was in Iowa somewhere.

I bought an aluminum case with 3.55 gears and trac lock from an 03 cobra for 436 shipped to my door. Was a little expensive, but it only has 20k on it so I won't have to rebuild anything. I will be swapping the spider gears out for 28 spline ones though.

How much are the spider and side gears ?
U want to do a write up on swapping the gear too
I could use my cobra diff but I'm still debating if buying a t-bird 3.55 out right will be easier

You are not going to find a t-bird with a 3.55s in it in a bone yard. I've been hunting for one for years and only ever came close once with 3.73s that was uber expensive. What you are going to find in the yards are mostly open units that are 3.08 or 3.27. There are still plenty of 8.8 posis out there through and cars being parted out all the time on TCCoA, but they will be the lower ratios.

Side gears are easy to swap but does anyone know if 28 splines are interchangeable with 31s? If so Travis got a great deal there. AGAIN!

PS to answer your cost question I bought my 3.27 8.8 locker off TCCoA for $120 shipped. I could have run it as is but didn't care how many miles it had on it because I put new everything in it anyway. Pretty much anything locking under 100 U pull it or 150 shipped is a decent deal. From there gear sets are 200ish, clutch packs 75ish, all seals, bearings and shims 100ish. 5 bucks for marking grease and 50 for a dial indicator and digital calipers of you don't have them already and you are good to go. And why 436 shipped for one ready to go is a dandy deal.

So after doing a fair amount of looking, the early 99 cobra IRS's actually had 28 spline axles out of the box.....Everything else appears to be the same. I have brought up the question on a couple of mustang forums I frequented in a previous life, but from what I can tell I should be able to buy the spider/side gear rebuild kit from ford for a 99 cobra, stick it in mine, and voila!
