Default Power steering pics please

Anyone using a Miata waterpump pully on a ford crank to run a Miata power steering pump ?

If so could you take a closeup pic of the modded Miata waterpump pully please ?

I am gathering parts for a conversion to power steering & a pic is worth a lot of words.

A pic on how the Miata ps pump is mounted would be appreciated a lot also.

Thanks

The center of the Miata pulley is cut out & the pulley is welded to the backside of the Ford crank pulley. The pump is bolted directly to the Ford P/S bracket via 2 bolts through 2 slotted holes in the bracket. I would take some pictures of the set-up, but with it all installed on my car, you cannot see the details. I remember seeing pictures of the parts prior to install on somebody's page. I will see if I can find them.

Here is a Mazda pump mounted directly to the Ford bracket. http://www.cardomain.com/ridepost/95...da-Miata-MX-5/ (YOU WILL HAVE TO HIT THE BACK ARROW ON THE PICTURE TO VIEW IT) If you look closely, you can see the slots in the bracket for belt adjustment.

Thanks for the pics Tbone .

For future searchers I am including a Miata pump mount that has a tensioner added.

If anyone has any other pics of the modded pully that would be interesting to see also. Backside , welds etc .

Thanks again.

I'm planning on adding a pulley modification service to my website. I've done two for customers already but need to have a lot of three to take to the "guy" to have them done. Let me know if you're interested and I'll see how many donor parts I have.

There is a flat charge for the modification and then a core charge for the Ford pulley and the Mazda pulley if you don't have ether.

I'm in the process of writing up a blog entry on the technical details of doing what's done in the above picture. When it's up I'll link it here (the car in the picture is mine-I have many more pictures of the PS bracket and pulley mods that I'll put in the blog post).

Well finally put on enough cloths & got brave enough to go into the unheated garage.

The mazda pully mounted behind the ford pully is a no go.

My crank pully is completely different than any of the ones in other pictures. The pully is a lot shorter & is almost touching the harmonic balancer. So no room for a extra pully behind the main belt .

Picture shows where I will probably mount the mazda pump.
Will need to find a 6 rib pully & bore it out , or bush it to fit the mazda pumps shaft.

Do rebuild mazda pumps come with pullys installed ?
Should be easy to press the old pully off, but am wandering about pressing a new one on. Don't want to damage pump or seals pressing the 6 rib pully on.

Anyone have suggestions about a 6 rib pully to use ? Will probably just search a scrap yard for one.

It appear that your engine has an underdrive set of pulleys on it. They supposedly free up horsepower by slowing down the speed of the accessories. Actually they cost you horsepower by making the engine run hotter due to the lower water pump speed. A/c performance & alternator output are also compromised. Get a set of the correct Mustang pulleys & install the Mazda 4-rib on the crankshaft pulley.

It looks like you have the later "short" accessory setup. The shorter setup was used on 94/95 Mustangs and 5.0 Explorers. You should be able to use the Ford powersteering pump with that setup without having to notch the frame to make it fit. You will have to have as set of custom hoses made (you'll have to have the rack end of your Mazda hoses cut off and connected to the pump end of the Ford hoses) but it should be a lot easier than what your looking at.

The issue with the accessory set you have is making the AC fit. Most people make a custom bracket and mount it down under the alternator where the smog pump went.

A cool thing about the accessores you have is that they are short enough that you should be able to mount your fans behind the radiator as pullers as opposed to in front as pushers. The same fan as a puller will be significantly more effective (think about pulling a rope as opposed to pushing it...).

Thanks for the info Jason.
Its good to know what the accessories come off of. My Ford knowledge is limited.

When looking for pullys I will keep an eye out for ford ps pumps on engines with short accessories.

Is this short setup specific to only a few vehicles, or more of a time period ?
