Default P. Steering pump options ?

I have purchased a SBF powered 90 Miata with manual steering.

What are the options for power steering pumps ?

Have no AC & drivers side front of engine is pretty open.

I am guessing mazda pump is smaller than a ford pump ?

Pics of your current setup would be very appreciated .

Have searched the forum but not came up with much info.

Thanks

Welcome to for the forum and V8 Miatas! There are lots of guys here that will know the answer but I'm not not one of them. I just wanted to say congrats on the buy! I'd sure love to know more about it and see photos of your car.

Do you have the build book from Martian? If not that would be a worth while investment and probably answer lots of questons for you.

The answer might also be in Jasons epic Ford thread here: https://www.v8miata.net/general-miat...nfo-fords-779/

I used the complete driveline from a 95 mustang gt which includes the Power steering pump and AC. I had to modify the frame by the PS pump for clearance. I wanted to be able to use the stock serpentine belt. I used the stock Miata hoses and steering rack. Just had to put a flare fitting into the Ford pump to adapt the Miata hose. A little different application than most of the guys on the forum. You can check out the pictures in the transformation V8mpictures

I am using the set-up from Monster Miata. It consists of a modified Ford bracket, a Miata pump, hoses, rack, & reservoir, & a Miata water pump pulley modified & attached to the Ford crank pulley. Works good.

Jonbon , so you used an adapter fitting on the pump ? Did it just screw into the pump ?

When you recommended pics in "transformation V8mpictures" , were you suggesting browsing the picture album section ? or were you suggesting a certain post ?

The Ford pump is probably the easiest way to go, but it is a bit clunky looking.

My first thought was using a mazda pump & swapping pulleys to match the current ford belt. Anyone tried this ?

The accepted practice is to use the Mazda pump with it's 4 rib pulley and weld a second pulley surface to the Ford crank pulley to run it with a short second belt. I can modify your Ford Crank pulley if you want to go that route. The Mazda pump is much smaller than the Ford unit.

Good info as I have a line on a car that does not have PS or AC and may want to add. Jason, If you were to modify the pulley, how long a turnaround would we be talking?

The flare adapter screwed into the pump. The pictures are in my gallery. The method Jason describes would be the easiest solution though. I only did it that way because I used a 95 GT donor.

I need to find a power rack anyway , so will get the hoses & Miata pump too.
Then see how it looks & see if any other ideas come to mind.

Are all 90 - 96 power racks the same ?

I was thinking maybe you could post an intro thread and tell us about yourself and the car here Introductions - v8 Miata Forum - Home of the v8 Miata Conversion

If you are going to do a lot of work on you could it post up a build thread here Build Threads - v8 Miata Forum - Home of the v8 Miata Conversion

Either way we'd just like to see it and hear about your journey!
