In case you weren't already aware, any car that is at least 25 years old is eligible for antique plates in Texas. You pick them up the same way you would normally via the tax office but you prepay for up to five years worth of registration. Antique plates are technically not supposed to be daily drivers, but as long as you carry some sort of insurance on the car you won't get into trouble over them. Antique plates are valid for up to five years (depending on which ones they have on hand) and don't require any type of emissions or safety inspection. The antique plates trump the window sticker.
I bought plates good through 2018 for my 1991 when the registration expired in 2016.
