Just installed electric cutouts
Thought I would share a few sound clips. Basic details. 92 miata w/ a 408W.
Flowmaster delta series 50's. Cutouts closed: Cutouts Open: Sorry, no revving. It was late and I didn't want to piss anyone in the neighborhood off. :anim_03: |
Wow that is epic! On the other hand you just ruined my day. I thought I had good sound but damn mine is pathetic now!
What cam are you running? Where did you put the cut outs? What headers and are you 2 1/2 true duels or a Y pipe? Details I need details! Yours sounds way better than mine! Well at least I have a new target for perfect sound in what you posted here for version 6 of my exhaust! |
I'm running a Crane Performance Hydraulic Cam (can't remember the cam spec's right now). Some basics on the engine,
Forged Eagle 4340 crankshaft Eagle forged H-beam connecting rods Forged Wiseco pistons Edlebrock Victor Jr. aluminum heads Edlebrock upper & lower intake manifolds MSD fuel pump RJM standalone EFI wiring harness A9L Ford computer Griffin radiator Exhaust is 2.5" true dual w/ an X pipe. Currently has no Cats, although, I'm planning on Magnaflow Cats in the near future (tired of smelling like fuel all the time). Cutouts are mounted about 2 feet after the x-pipe, about a foot before the rear axle. The headers are 351W shorty headers. Swapped from left to right for clearance and exit to the front and down. You can kind of see here. I'll try to find a better pick as I'm in the process of wrapping the headers and exhaust. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...46478257ot1lsi Here's a shot of the exhaust exiting http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...54877257ot1lsi |
Oh dang you have a Ford build no wonder. Even with many $$$$ in cool parts my LS car would NEVER sound as good as your set up. It's just not in the genes.
So I aplaud you for an epic build and showing us how it's done! |
Thanks for the compliments. My prior toy was a bolt on LS1 GTO. Pacesetter LT's, Catless Mid's, Flowmaster 40's. It sounded great...but...It's hard to beat the sound of a well build Ford. There's just something about their line of v8's that have a great exhaust note when done right.
By the way, your car sounds pretty damn good. It's always hard to chase a particular sound. A good set of ported 243 heads, a mild cam and LT Headers really help the LS1 shine and sound great. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I've ever seen LT's on a Miata build... |

I can't wait to see that. I've been contemplating a custom built set for the 408W, as it could use the extra air flow, especially with the Victor Jr Intake. But, dropping 2K on a custom set makes me think about puking.
|
You still might have to puke the new V8R headers are around $1100 shipped. I know a couple guys have ordered them but no results yet.
|
V8R headers?? Have you heard anything about them yet?

FM posted a vid of the LS3 car that's running the LT's. It's a no cats car though. |

Speaking of cut-out's, my QTP's have been flaky since week 1. It seems like the gears keep getting hung up.
While I'm not crazy about how they've held up, their tech support seems to stand behind their equipment. I spoke with them today and they will fix them... I just have to send them back to NJ. Anyway, here they are installed (without the turn-downs): Attachment 6650 And yes, the long tubes without cats sound amazing with the cut-out's wide open :D |
I keep asking IB for a like button and we need it again today!!! Very nice!
|
:appl:DamnNice!!!! But we do need to talk about that Granny shifting. Old guy technique.....right foot to floor, tickle clucth....shift....hard... and fast! Still very nice and sounds almost as good as a Ford :):appl:

Yeah haha, my T56 is due for a rebuild. My syncros were not happy that night. It's all I could do to get a clean run :(

Here is a quick shot of QTP Electric Cutouts on the FM Exhaust system
They are controlled with wireless key fob So now I know what a LS3 engine sounds like :firedevil: They are hidden under back bumper , so you don't see them |

I like the way you dump out the back rather than leave it under the car. That's a great set up! For the file just put it up on youtube and put the link here. That's the way the forum pages work the best.
I'm doing a little tweaking with my exhaust too before the trip so we'll have to compare notes. |
QTP Exhaust
Yes the guys did a great job welding into the pipe just before the muffler,
All in stainless steel ,. I checked with QTP on we're to install so I did not effect engine tune , ox sensors, spark plugs etc, no X pipe .....just simple two valve install. The Key fob wireless works great ....don't have to drill and mount switch in car etc......I used the QTP Low Profile cutout kit 2.5 inch The look on the faces of the cars you pull up beside are worth the price....lol We leave on the 21st for Mitty .....should be fun ! Qtp
No Problem
|
...has me thinking..... I wonder if I get them set up coming out where yours are but exiting back into the exhaust post muffler. Basically just a muffler bypass. ...could be a clean set up if there is room...
|
Qtp
Not sure if there is enough room to enter the tips after muffler, or just
extend tip pipe to allow ???:ugh2: |
That is basically what I did with mine Michael. I just cut a by pass in the side of the muffler to avoid the baffles. But I think it could be done externally as well by T-ing off the input to the muffler and Y-ing it into the pipes after the muffler. The problem with that is when I tried it you only get about 30% relief and most of the exhaust still goes though the muffler. It wakes up at WOT but not like full blown cut outs.
The easy way to get it all is to pass straight though the muffler. If you look inside your muffler where the pipes enter it there is an open chamber there. The stainless is darker on the back side of that open part because the input gasses pass straight though and hit that the back wall of the muffler there. So you just put 2 pipes straight back from the input pipes with cut outs in them you'd have it. You could make it pretty by doing a center mount exhaust off them or dump them into your tail pipes. |
I follow what you are saying, but it wouldn't fit the aesthetics I'm looking for. Honestly if it only made a 30% increase I'd likely be damn happy as it it'd be bearable to drive around like that then close them in residential areas or with the wife on board.
