It's a Maserati 4.2 2005.


I don't want to spent more than 1500 on the transmission (I find some new rebuild for that price near me). I'll need a custom adapter plate too... Why the T5 interest me more is the cost and it still lighter than the t56, as I can remember 75 lbs.

I just don't want to have a 1st gear to short and I don't care about the mpg.

Maybe the t56 is best for my engine? This is why I asked the question.

Holy cow a Maserati!?! Where in the world are you? That is sweet!!!

I would think the best trans for the job would be the one that is suppose to be on that engine. It would certainly be the easiest to deal with as far as them working together. Is that a spendy trans or something?

Short 1st is more a matter of what rear end and tire you run and what you feel is short. If you run the normal 3.27 you will for sure not be too short with either trans. But there are guys out there with 4.11s with a T5 that don't feel they are too short.

I'm really happy with my set up with 3.55s and it is for sure not too short. Sure I can start in 2nd but she'll do over 40 in 1st and there are plenty of times like starting on a hill that the low 1st is great. Check out this video working on a 0-60 time.

The reason why not use the Maserati transmission is it's hard to find and the cost for it. If I was in Europe, it will be easier but here... Honestly I prefer a more common transmission with more upgrade available. The adapter plate is not a big deal IMO.

I was supposed to build a Prelude with this engine and all the drive train but the major problem with the F1 transmission is the reliability and the cost of all Maserati parts, I decide to use the less Maserati stuff as possible.

I chose a Miata instead because I find more cars to chose from at lower cost than the Prelude. I don't want to spent to much on this one, I want to see how the engine run with this set-up before putting to much money. Call it Version 1...

Insane build man! No question I would use that Maserati transaxle. I understand you feel it is not reliable but keep in mind it will be pushing around 1/3rd less weight than it did before so much less stress on it than it was designed for. Besides it's just outright cool!

That being said it looks kind of big to fit in there. Would selling it pay for a T5 you think?

Even it's 1/3, the cost for the repair are so high that it doesn't make sense to use it. The other thing you have to consider is that the F1 transmission is controlled by computer and only a dealer can adjust the clutch bearing, etc. The pump itself is very expensive. The clutch and bearing clutch cost like 3000$!

The more simple it is, the better. The selling of the F1 drive train will cover the T5 easily.

OK makes sense. But how you gonna come up with a bell housing and clutch to marry the two together? They have to be spot on lined up or you will have all kinds of problems with it.

Seems to me it would be a heck of a lot less headache to sell the whole thing and buy and LS1, T56 drop out rather than reinvent the wheel sort of speak. Surely there has to be crashed Camaros in your part of the world they made them just down the way from you!

What I need is an adapter plate. You can use any bell housing you want. A machinist can do an adapter plate easily. Use Google and you will even find some DIY. It's very common in the 4x4 world to use with diesel engine.

LS1 in a Miata is done all the time...
