Just starting another project
Hello Everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself, My name is Jerry and I’m a car addict, . I’ve been lurking on the forum for awhile and just recently joined. I’m in the early stages of planning my V8 Miata project and I’m starting to have some specific questions that Ill need your help with. But first let me fill you in on my plans. I’m planning a build that will be 75% street curser and 25% HPDE track car, I want to start with a low mileage NB, low mileage because I got my fill of bodywork on my last project and NB because I like the front end styling. This will be a LS swap because I’m very familiar with the engine platform. This will not be my first swap, here is the project I just completed. It’s a 65 C10 with an 02 5.3L and 4L60E trans.
I’m currently working on the engine, it’s a 6.0L iron block LS2 clone and will be about 450 HP when I’m done. At this point I’m still going back and forth between using a T56 manual or a 4l80E auto for the trans, both have their pluses, it will most like come down to cost in the end. Speaking of cost my total all in budget for the project is $20K and I looking to spread the project (and cost) over 2 -3 years.
Here comes my first question: Breaks, because this car will see track time I would like to keep anti-lock breaks. So anytime I need to be aware of during the teardown and part selection? Also any thoughts on upgrades.
Thanks
Jerry

Welcome to the forum, Jerry. I look forward to seeing your project take shape.
If you desire to have anti-lock brakes I think it would be by far easiest to find a car that already has them. To further upgrade your brakes, the Sport/MSM were factory options that bolt right up to increase both disc size and swept caliper area. I have some comparative pictures of these I hope to find time to post soon. They are a nice upgrade at reasonable cost. There are even better aftermarket options but at substantially higher cost.
There are also interesting options for swapping factory boosters and master cylinders to get exactly the brake performance you want. Typing on an iPad now, so will post an excellent brake thread reference for you when I get to a PC.

Here you go, Jerry. Some interesting brake information (tech!) - MX-5 Miata Forum
I learned a bunch about factory Miata brake systems from this thread. Based on what I learned there, my 1990 is getting 2002 Sport discs and calipers all around, good pads, a dual diaphragm booster from an NB with anti-lock, and a 1" master cylinder from a Mazda 929.
It is my opinion this brake system will provide all the stopping power you could ever effectively apply. The only thing you could hope to gain with an aftermarket "big brakes" set-up is increased thermal capacity for continuous (track) usage.
