Baad 88's 91 Miata Ford build
Getting my parts in order so I can start when the nicer weather gets here.
88 5.0L and T5 with a 7.5 diff Ordered Martins kit less K member and header. (having a custom K member made) On the car itself I have put a new roof and leather seats from a 2004. Other than that it is stock but not for long. Here are some pics for now.https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...b66b62e5ea.jpgThe car that gave it's heart https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...3eba37c2ce.jpgRolling chassis is sold. (bonus) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...0b08a86628.jpgNeeds work |
And yes, I am doing this in a single car garage.

I have an engine stand . And yes being organized is going to be key. How is long did it take you from start to finish? |
Mine was built about 2004 by one of the nicest guys in S. Ont. Just needed to certify and etest. Don't rush, get it right. Vic
|
I won’t be rushing. I figure if I’m going to do it I might as well do it right. |
Kitchener! Wow, I’m only an hr away...near Grand Bend. Feel free to drop me a line. I built a ‘90 in my single car garage a couple winters ago. sales AT exetermusic DOT com. |

From the pics it looks like you have good steering shaft clearance from the header. How’s exhaust clearance going into the tunnel? Would love to get together to compare builds once you’re up and running. |
The exhaust clearance looks better than I thought it would but time will tell when I get the tubing done. |
A little bit more work done.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...0e5929895.jpegA few more parts put back on. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...cf2ddd18e.jpegMan that idler pulley sits high! |
Looks great so far ! what do you plan on wiring / ecu ? Alot of people have had good luck with the megasquirt pnp unit.
Also what valve covers are those or are they a custom job ? They look great ! |

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...71f99dfb1.jpegVacuum line that I’m not sure about. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...f6953d830.jpegAnother vacuum line I’m not sure about. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...d37a35ef1.jpegStarting to come together |
In the first picture, on a Mustang, that line actually does a u-turn with a factory molded hose and attaches to a metal "T" that is threaded into the bottom side of the upper intake plenum (between the top of the valve cover and the bottom of the plenum near #7 and #8 cylinders) and the other molded hose coming from that hidden "T" goes to the PCV valve. That is so that the PCV system can evacuate any oil residue that might accumulate in the upper intake.
In the second picture, I am assuming that you are referring to the "blue" nipple? In a Mustang, that attaches to a vacuum canister that supplies vacuum to the HVAC mode doors. |

Run your booster off of the vacuum tree at the rear underside of the intake.

I’m slowly getting things sorted out. Hoping to try and start it on the weekend. |

It’s Alive!! |

Awesome!

Another monster is born!:smilie_daumenpos:

Getting the body bolted back on. It looks like a Miata again. Still lots of little things to do yet. But it goes for exhaust next Monday so I’m going to wait until after to get some of those done. |
|
Looks great. I wish I had gone that route with headers, Mine are wrapped around the cradle.
|
Thank you. I didn’t want to use Martins headers. I didn’t even buy them with the kit. |
Well I finally got the car out of storage.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...eaa47f0cc.jpeg
Getting everything finished up. Still dealing with some issues. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...d8783ea3b.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...3c7d30bb2.jpeg |
Now if I can figure out why the car keeps running after I shut if off. But only after it warms up. Under 170 degrees it will shut off like normal and start just fine. As many times as I want until it warms up. Anyone have any ideas?
|
Looks nice and clean. I'm still tempted to do this swap down the road as the 93 Ford ECU is pretty old/raw when it comes to control/adaptability.
|
Maybe it is trying to run away from that Chevy distributor...LOL!!
But seriously, I would check into the ignition switch and related wiring for high resistance when hot. |

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...11a94f571.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...b7a94da08.jpeg Everything is finally figured out and it runs fantastic. Still a few things to do like tach and pull the rear end apart. It’s making some clunking noises. I think there will always be something with this car. Lol as far as the Chevy distributor, I just got lazy. Lol. It almost bit me in the ass because of the height of it. Full inch taller but it just fits. |
Congrats! Yeah, I agree, it's always something. I don't think mine will ever be "done" as I am always thinking of things that I can improve/need to adjust or fix.
|

very happy with how it turned out. Still needs an altitude adjustment. But has lots of attitude. Lol the 327 gears are a little too big but still fun. Going to enjoy it while I can this year and fix all the little things in the spring. |
What are your overall thoughts on the FiTech? Really considering on going that route, or Sniper, for next year as with the cam I am running, the Ford EFI is a little on the rough side, and there are not many tuners around that will mess with that old ECU.
|
I like the Fitech. It came with everything you needed and was very easy to install. The only thing I’m not a fan of is the hand held. The connections at the hand held are not very sturdy and you have to unplug them quite often. It works just fine and I’m still playing with it. The Fitech was the cheapest and I got it on sale. It’s all about budget. Lol
really cleans up the engine bay. |
Yeah, I’m leaning towards Sniper. I like the idea of the great factory support, and Holley is now selling factory reman’d 600 ho units for $799 with warranty. Not bad if you ask me.
|
That is a good price. Might be cheaper than the Fitech.
|
Yep, think it is. They have all 3 color options listed on ebay, direct through Holley. I'm currently running factory 93 Cobra ECU/MAF/24 lb injectors, and it runs pretty rough when cold, not as bad when warm (I'm sure my stage 2 TF cam is a big part of that). Thinking the Sniper and a Stealth manifold would make a great combo, just have to see if it will fit under the hood. Which intake manifold are you running?
|
Nice build. Would be interested in your thoughts on the Fitech after living with it for a while. I’m thinking of ditching the OEM EFI. I’m near Grand Bend if you happen to ever be this way.
