Default Ford Coyote possibility thread

Hi all.
I've started this thread as a place for those who want to think about the possibility of using Ford's new Coyote engine in a NA, NB or even an NC Miata. I personally think the engine has a POSSIBILTY of fitting and may be a good candidate for future NC swaps at the very least.

Here's some food for thought to start off with:
I just stumbled across a blog by High Flow Performance in which they mount a new Coyote crate engine in a 1986 Mustang notch back (fox). The main evidence this swap shows us which is relevant to us is hood clearance (similar to NA/NB Miatas), oil sump location and pan design and radiator/firewall clearance. It also lends some credence to the belief that the Coyote MAY fit between the frame rails of a Miata. Someone would really have to measure the distance of a Fox body's rails and compare to a NA/NB/NC Miata to be sure. What is not good is that they state that the engine appears very close dimensionally to it's predecessor the 4.6 mod motor...

Interesting read none-the-less.

The direction of hte exhaust ports in this picture looks like it may be promising:

LMR wants $6129.99 for one. You would still need the harness and PCM though which I think brings the price up to a even $8K or so.

I'm pretty sure you'd have to use the trans from the new Mustang although I'm sure adapter bells will be not that far down the road to mate it up to a T-5 or T-56.

Smile Coyote will be tough

Jason,

The biggest problem in getting this motor (or the older 4.6 4V motor) into a Miata (or 64-66 Comet/Falcon/Mustang or 70-75 Maverick) are the very wide and relatively tall cylinder heads. A 4.6 DOHC motor is wider (measured from the most outside edge of each valve cover) than the old big block Boss 429 motor! A Fox body Mustang has a McPherson strut front suspension which provides much more room in the stock engine compartment than vintage Mustangs with their protruding shock towers and traditional upper and lower control arms. I've eyeballed some NCs with the hoods up and the engine compartment didn't appear all that large. Most people don't realize how wide the Ford modmotors really are, the 2Vs are real wide, the 3Vs are slightly narrower and the 4Vs are simply huge. I don't have the specs for the Coyote in front of me, but I suspect it is very close to the width of the old 4.6 DOHC modmotor.

BTW, if I had my druthers, the ideal mod motor/Miata swap is not a new Coyote...it's the old Terminator Cobra 4.6 DOHC supercharged motor with a ported Eaton, high boost pulley, CAI and good dyno tune that will put down 500+whp! Used Terminators sell for less than new Coyotes and I could learn to live with a hood scoop.

This picture is what put it in perspective for me when the idea of a Termi Swap came to me.

4.6 SOHC!! Awesome motor boost friendly, torque monster, skinnier, easy to come by and proven reliability. The stock bottom end in good shape can handle a good amount of horseys all day. I want one in an NB after I finish my 5.0 NA. Good pair in my eyes.

SOHC = iron block. Why bother? HP/Weight is the ticket.
I'd go all alloy LS before I'd even bother with an iron block Ford, or for that matter, iron anything!

As opposed to the push rod 302... For the people who may be on a bit of a budget and or prefer ford, aluminum blocks can be purchased.

If the fit would work, would love the new 5.0 Coyote. 412 HP(crank) in its weakest form and loved the one I had in my 2012 Mustang. It may be spendy but will increase the power greatly over the old 5.0 or 4.6.
