Road Atlanta April 24-26, 2015 the first ever invasion of V8 Miatas at Mitty!

The V8s are rolling into Mitty for great racing, a great car show and all the V8 Miatas we can gather!

Mitty happens April 24-26 2015 at Road Atlanta with racing and great cars all 3 days.

1/28 schedule update this should be final
Friday morning: Flyin Miata V8 Corral opens.

Noon: Free fast parade laps on Road Atlanta for all V8 Miatas brought to you by http://i62.tinypic.com/2ia61s2.jpg

Afternoon: Hang out and watch the races.

Friday night: There's usually a Mazda party at the GRM tent.

Saturday: Show day! Line them up in the V8 Corral. Hang out and check out V8 Miatas (and their offshoots) as well as some other great cars and racing. It's tough to get in and out of the track on Saturday so plan to come early and stay late.

Saturday night: Meet up with the local MX5 Atlanta folks for a big party at a local restaurant.

Sunday: V8 Corral is open. Options to watch races, check out the skid pad or head north to cruise the hills of Georgia with the option to continue on to the Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee.

Link on http://i62.tinypic.com/2ia61s2.jpg site HERE with the same schedule and info.

Info on Mitty and ticket information is here here and here. You will need a pass and infield parking pass for Saturday to join us in the FM corral.

http://i58.tinypic.com/11avg9l.jpg NEWS FLASH Free parking info!
To get a free corral parking pass when purchasing your tickets, add an infield pass to your shopping cart. Then use coupon code FlyinMiata15. That will make the pass free and you'll get added to the list for a corral pass instead of just the infield parking.

No car yet? NO PROBLEM!
If you are a member here and considering doing a build or have a build in process that won't be done in time please come anyway. This is an unprecedented opportunity for you to see dozens of V8 cars and talk to the guys that built them.

Post here or PM me if you can make it or even if you might come so FM can have plenty of space for us. We are also looking at shirts or other goodies and need a count for that.
ALL V8 Miata cars, owners and soon to be owners are welcome!

It'd be a fun idea. But some of the yanks are gonna need to thaw out first. :hah:

Unk577 11-24-2014 08:08 PM

Where is everyone located? There are several LS miatas here in Florida and counting. Quite a few up the east coast and Texas.

jreid1000 11-24-2014 08:52 PM

Sarasota Florida has at least four.
Mine runs but doesn't quite move or stop yet.

Sunshine Guy 11-25-2014 12:49 AM

I'm rollin' in Jacksonville. I believe there are a couple other finished cars here and I'm aware of two under construction.

V8droptop 11-25-2014 02:28 AM

I have a great idea, you guys could come and visit in North Dakota. We can have a contest to see who can take off from a standstill the fastest in an iced-over parking lot. So far my best time is 5 minutes!

:eek3dance:

Seriously, though, the mitty in Atlanta or another very large car gathering would be fun to hit up with other v8r's. I think that's the best way to do it, anyone have events they could suggest?

I've thought of this many times too what fun it would be to hang out together and see all the awesome hardware that is on this site. One of the highlights of my V8 Miata experience was meeting up with 2 other cars at an autocross in Minneapolis last year. Besides the owners being a blast to spend the day with seeing 1400 HP in 3 tiny cars was epic!
https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1416910656

I'm looking at doing the hotrod power tour next year if they will ever post the dates and cities. Atlanta for Mitty would not be totally out of the question. Something like Flyin Miatas summer camp or any of the SCCA national solo events would be epic too.

cruizin54 11-25-2014 08:24 AM

It sounds like there are at least a few here in Florida. I'm about 1 1/2 hours north of Tampa and 2 1/2 hours SW of Jacksonville.

523-LSX-NB 11-25-2014 03:00 PM

Yah, we'd need to just pick somewhere regionally. Seems more difficult than doable. Maybe start a poll to find where everyone could meet & then propose a meet in each section w/ the most cars in the region. Options being, NE, SE, NW, SW, N. Central, S. Central; Continental US of course.

Off topic, but...
Saw 2 butchered builds locally & was not impressed. Cars were completely gutted shells w/ wires hanging everywhere, overly cambered wheels & gawd awful rear diffusers. Seems kids are reading the net & their interpretation of what they read is not very good. These were supposed to be street cars, but looked bad even if they had been track specific cars.

charchri4 11-25-2014 03:17 PM

If we could get everyone to fill in their location box in their profile it would help a lot.

To update your location got to User CP, then Edit your details and in the 3rd box down under additional information put your location in the location box.

V8droptop 11-26-2014 03:57 AM

My first thought was Kansas City, MO. Not for the cars, but the BBQ. But on second thought, I'm going to the Mitty, and its an awesome deal. I'll be in the Mazda-3 or Challenger this time, though. Not likely to be past a roller by april.

cheers,
n

1999monster 11-26-2014 09:04 AM

I like the idea.

Two that I know of in the Chicago, IL area

Keith 11-26-2014 05:30 PM

Jim poked me about this. We always have a lot of V8s at our Summer Camp, but it would be fun to do something at the Mitty.

How about this? FM will sponsor a special corral for the V8 Miatas in the infield. We can combine this with a dinner one night.

https://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog...mer-camp-1.jpg

523-LSX-NB 11-26-2014 05:42 PM

I voted NE, Atlanta & Power Tour stop. Although, if SE were in the Carolinas may be able to come. Best location for us would be NE or OH, MI or PA area. I know there's a few V8's in MI, OH & PA.

Coming down 77 or 75 for an Atlanta meet in April might be difficult due to the road conditions North of Kentucky & Virginia depending on rt taken. Would be worth the risk for a shot @ road Atlanta, though. :skid:

Keith 11-26-2014 08:42 PM

Yes, consider it a challenge!

I think we had 8 parked at the shop last week, not including the ones that will have V8s but are patiently waiting for us to start :D We're down to 7 now that the lava car is with the new owner. I can't remember how many were at the Summer Camp last year.

tbone heller 11-27-2014 08:15 AM

Since Road Atlanta is only 54 miles away, count me in.

charchri4 11-27-2014 10:05 PM

test post to move

523-LSX-NB 11-27-2014 10:56 PM

Will do what we can to ------ the word. W/ several months before April, may be able to peak some interest. Would be helpful if others could do the same through sites where they know other V8 swappers.

charchri4 11-28-2014 05:41 AM

I've got posts on Mnet, Clubroadster, MiataForumz.com, mazdaroadster.net and mx5atlanta.com. That's all I could think of but if there is someplace else by all means post it!

Flying Miata has a V8 owners registry /mailing list and figured after the holidays we could ask Jeremy to send out a blurb on it. Ditto with Martin at Monster and Shandelle at V8R. All of the above also have facebook pages it can go on once we know it's a go.

I'm not really sure how many cars it takes to make it an event. I would think Jack would come from Greenville, Pat from NC and surely Shannon from Atlanta would be there. I can't commit yet but will talk to the boss this weekend on it...

Gator Bait 11-28-2014 07:41 AM

I put the idea out to the wife, she's game. We'd likely make a week of it and head north to Deals Gap/Smokey mtns for a few days also.

V8droptop 11-29-2014 03:24 AM

I'm wondering how many Speeds are V8 conversions that hang out on Mazda-speed.com. Should drop by and see who can make the Mitty. That's the best event for me, because I know I can get it off. I have to shuffle my flights around now to make sure I get the time off. Looks like a yes, though.

Do MSMs constitute the largest number of V8 swaps, I wonder? Sure do see a ton on FM's site.

Keith 11-29-2014 08:06 AM

Last time we checked, about 25% of our turn-key conversions were based on MSMs. That's by the choice of the customer.

We have a pretty big mailing list of V8 builders. We can get the word out once we've set a few things.

V8droptop 11-29-2014 10:13 AM

Keep us updated, Keith. 3-4 of us from MN would like to come. It would be amazing to meet everyone. Hopefully the In-law will come with his 1.8 BRG, and the challenger can come possibly. Would be fun.

Cheers,
Nick

LS1Tech is where I spend the most time. Posted the event in the conversions section. We may pick up get a few of the new swappers. Although, seems like 1/2 the people who had build threads over there kept the car for a year or so & then sold it. We will see.

Tickets to mitty would be a great stocking stuffer!

523-LSX-NB 12-01-2014 08:48 PM

Wasn't really sure what "The Mitty" was & read about the event today. Originally, thought we'd get some on track time while there. That's a long way to go & not be able to use the car. Any locals wanna show us the "fun" roads while we're there?

I'd say "Tail of the Dragon," but have heard it's over crowded due to its' popularity.

charchri4 12-01-2014 09:05 PM

I have never been to the event but isn't Thursdays test and tune open to anyone? If you look at last years schedule it looks like a normal track day that anyone could pay the $$ and run.

But yeah we need to get one of our Atlanta guys to map us out a nice twisty back road with very little traffic on it for a cruise! The local Miata club is stoked we are coming and I can ask them or maybe tbone or Shannon would want to map something out.

tbone heller 12-02-2014 07:33 AM

Saturday is the best day for the Mitty. I attended it on a Sunday a few years ago & found that half of the cars were loaded up & headed home. The racing is pretty fun to watch, but viewing the cars in the paddock is amazing.
I am sure that the guys at mx5atlanta can find you some good roads to cruise on.

flipt86 12-02-2014 11:24 AM

Logged in and voted... Would love to have the car down there by April... If not, I would still like to come and meet everyone/drool on some cars that are actually running and driving...

If we do the Mitty we'll (wife and I) likely head that way for a few days afterward. The Dragon is no fun on the weekends IMO due to the number of cars and bikes and cops. But on weekdays you can have some fun. The Dragon is on my route to and from the roads I really like to drive/ride (motorcycle) so I never go with the intention of just hanging there. There are enough great roads in the area to fill several days. And the Smokey Mtn Nat'l park is a gorgeous drive also, but best driven for the scenery, not the trill. ...federal tickets are no joke. I've been going for years and know the roads decently and happy to lead a drive or three. We typically stay in a rental cabin near Townsend, TN. Easy access to all the good roads and tourist attractions w/o the higher costs and tourist population. Oh...and importantly...it's not dry. ...beer and wine at the grocery. :friday:

tbone or Shannon have you ever started at 10 Turners Corner Rd. Cleveland, GA and gone north to Blairsville? Looks like an excellent drive in google earth!

I don't drive my car. It just sits in the garage so I can mess with it in my spare time. If I decide to drive it, I will have to take it off of "storage-mode" on my insurance.:sly:

SB5700 12-02-2014 05:28 PM

There are several excellent drives up in that area. I have driven them all, however, I could not tell you the road numbers/names combinations for the loops. Hwy 60 and/or 180 are also very good drives. 180 is a little rougher. 60 all the way to Morganton is a very nice ride.

The MX5 Atlanta club often does those drives with groups.

charchri4 12-02-2014 08:43 PM

LOL OK I guess well work that out later. It looks like my kind of road though!

Gator Bait 12-03-2014 07:58 AM

This is an entertaining loop, but it's hard to go wrong. Pick a squiggly road and drive it.

Cherohala Skyway is a great drive also: Cherohala Skyway, mile high legend from Robbinsville NC to Tellico Plains TN

Lots of links and info here: Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, motorcycle and sport car two lane tourism serving Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, Cherohala Skyway, Moonshiner28, Devils Triangle, and Six Gap North Georgia.

Yeah, I'm lucky, only about 140-150 miles. No kidding... Haha. I'll be there, with or without my pile...

523-LSX-NB 12-04-2014 01:31 PM

We've moved from the maybe list to the attending list. Are there enough people confirmed to discuss details? We tentatively plan to drive down on Thursday to attend on Friday, Saturday; returning Sunday.

charchri4 12-04-2014 01:50 PM

^^ Pretty much my plan too except for me it's a 2 day trip. Check that - my car was built by the road kill guys so the trip could take from 2 days to 2 weeks depending on what goes wrong....

I've never been to the event so don't know how things work at all. I would assume guys will want to walk the car show and watch some racing. For us we need a time when we can all be together for a photo opp, then cruise the hills for a couple hours and do either lunch or dinner depending on the time of day.

Anyone been to mitty that can tell us how the event works and what it's like to attend?

I don't know who "the road kill guys" are, but after a couple of years it won't matter because you will know the car inside & out.

Yah, many of us are traveling a long way. Hoping we get @ least two days out of it.

Indeed. It's a 14 hour haul for me. We prefer to travel with the dogs so between them and my wife's shoe suitcase we'll have trailer the car there. The drive back from CO was the last long mileage I'll do in that car. My bones are too old for that!

523-LSX-NB 12-08-2014 11:22 AM

Happy to see an NC on the list. Haven't seen one yet (V8).

Keith 12-08-2014 11:30 AM

About the Mitty: it's a vintage race weekend. The track is full other than some heavily escorted parade laps. I've heard stories of high speeds on those, but my personal experience has been very slow.

It also attracts a huge number of clubs. Saturday is a great car show, both in the pits and parked in the paddock. We'll have a corral for V8 Miatas set up. It'll be a good opportunity to check out other builds and catch some great racing.

https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/ev...rsports-mitty/

charchri4 12-08-2014 12:39 PM

OK so Saturday is the day then but it sounds like we would want to be there most of the day to hang out. So what do you guys think? Would it work better to do a morning cruise up in the hills rather than in the afternoon or evening? Probably be less traffic then.

Keith 12-08-2014 12:55 PM

I'd recommend one day for driving and one day for spectating. Say, gather on Saturday and drive and Sunday.

charchri4 12-08-2014 02:32 PM

LOL works for me! I was planning on leaving Sunday morning to head up the tail of the dragon anyway!

Gator Bait 12-09-2014 06:12 AM

Bingo.

Keith 12-09-2014 09:48 AM

Thee have been some mentions of a "test and tune" day on Thursday. Nobody at Grassroots Motorsports knows anything about that. Who's got any sort of info to share? Even the source of the rumor would be good.

charchri4 12-09-2014 10:01 AM

Reading the paper work from last year it's not clear if the Thursday open track is just for registered racers or open to anyone that would pay the fee. One of our guys toysnake went last year and from the way he talked it sounded like would have been an option for him to get out on the track but maybe that was just the parade thing.

Check this out: http://www.hsrrace.com/2014_Events/M...y_Schedule.pdf The only hint is at the bottom when it says test day will be in the order of your race group. To me that makes it look like racers only on the track but it really doesn't say one way or the other.

If GRM doesn't know about it then it must be only open to racers.
