New Thick Film Ignition (TFI) heat sink relocation kit

1 Attachment(s)
I'm almost ready to put my new design TFI relocation/heat sink kit up on my website. It's been under "development" in head for the last few years and I think will make a great alternative to the used heat sinks I've been using up to this point:

Here's my first "production prototype":

https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1386737014

I've got a bit more written up about it in my last two blog entries:

Most recent:
Design 2 TFI Kits Almost ready to GO!!! - McCully Racing Motors - - - - - - - - - - -- ATTACK OF THE BLOG!!!!

One before that (talks about my goals with the new kit):
TFI Kits Under Revison-New heat sink design to be released!!!! - McCully Racing Motors - - - - - - - - - - -- ATTACK OF THE BLOG!!!!

Anyone who has the "old" kit and wants to upgrade their heat sink only will be able to get one at a special "existing customer" price. This price is not the same as new customers who only want to buy a heat sink.

Forgot to mention - the price remains the same :)

Development is done and the kits are ready to ship:

More here at the MRM Blog:

If anyone who has already purchased a TFI kit from me wants to upgrade their heat sink to this new style please contact me via email. I have a price listed on the website for purchase of a "heat sink only" for those who what to build their own harness. This price does not apply to you, for existing customers I'll upgrade your kit for less than the heat sink only price listed on the site since you've already purchased one from me.

Any special pricing for forum members?

MRM331 06-30-2014 10:14 PM

I'd be willing to think about a group buy with a discount if enough people are interested.

I'd likely be in. I'll be in touch shortly again about that harness too Jason. Thanks. Brad

Hi Jason, do you ship to Canada? I would like to purchase one after having to replace my TFI!

MLKNR 08-20-2014 06:41 PM

What is this for?

cvx_20 08-20-2014 07:25 PM

Ford

MLKNR 08-20-2014 07:34 PM

Okay sure, but I'll admit when I'm a noon. Was is it's function?

cvx_20 08-20-2014 07:38 PM

Keeps the ignition module cool. It's a known weakness in the factory design. Needs a little help.

Mike

MLKNR 08-20-2014 07:47 PM

Ah thank you. Yup put me down for one.

relocates the ignition control module somewhere cooler... Ford mounted it on the distributor using the distributor as a heatsink... they're known to chronically fail... when they act up the car doesn't run, leaves you stranded...

all kinds of people on Mustang Forums are even buying MRM's relocation kit, as far as i've read, it pretty much fixes the problem...

you could just go buy a heatsink and wire and do it all yourself but for 54$, not even worth it.

I can ship to Canada although the shipping is another $13 over the domestic charge.

It becomes worth it due to the small quantity of a few of the components that can only be purchased in bulk. For example, each kit uses about 4 feet of 3M conductive adhesive RF shielding tape. The smallest roll one can get of this stuff is 12 yards long and costs $22. I use three strands of differently colored 18 gauge wire that can only be purchased in 40 rolls. If you were to walk into an auto parts store and pick up three rolls each would cost you $7. We're now up to $43. The ends I use on the TFI end come in 10 packs for another $7. The blue and red heat shrink each comes in a roll for another $6. The black heat shrink comes in a bag which runs me $10. We're now up to $79 and we have not even touched the other two types of terminals and the tape I use in the construction of the jumper harnesses or the heat sink I have custom made. The heat transfer grease that I pre-apply to the heat sink is computer grade Artic Silver 5 which only comes in a tube that is large enough to do about 5 heat sinks. That tube alone is $13.

My point is that because I make 30 or so of these a month and can buy materials in bulk I can get the price down to where I have it. If you were to buy all the "ingredients" in the smallest quantities possible you'd easily be over $100. You'd also have to buy the special Ford tool needed to remove the TFI from your distributor. They are $15 or you can rent one from me for $2.

I just updated the MRM site with a special "International" ordering button.

It sounds like a few people here would be interested in a group buy. I'd be happy to comply especially if we can wait a few months until my rush season is over (late fall). I'd structure it so that the more order I get the greater the discount. To make it fair everyone would still have to pay shipping to wherever they are. Thoughts?

i'd be cool with a group buy... I'm not too sure how many here are interested. but i can wait a few months for it... i just installed a premium priced TFI and purchased artic silver to mount it, so i think it should be ok for a few months this way at least. hopefully....

I saw that special tool people buy... but I honestly just used a deep socket and it worked pretty good..

I'd be in for one on a group buy. The trick to bumping the quantity up would be to get the group buy posted simultaneously on the Mustang forums. We're a small community here; the Muskrat folks are a Metropolis.

Lack of sales is not an issue. Much to the opposite I have trouble keeping up most of the time. The "old" kit using a reclaimed heat sink sold pretty well and I really though I would maybe lose sales when I went to my own sink. The opposite happened. I sell twice what I did in the past. The majority of the buyers are already Mustang, F150, Bronco and Ranger fold. I get a fair amount of business from FF Cobra people too.

The reason for a group buy here would be to thank the V8 Miata community for getting me started in this in the first place, not to sell more. Because I am having trouble keeping up with normal business a group buy would not be feasible until the demand slows down as it traditionally has done over the winter. I'm thinking like shortly after the new year when people are getting their cars ready for next season.

Would that work for everyone?

Works for me, Jason. Your support for the V8 Miata community is appreciated.

Being an old marketing guy, it occurs to me that a neat and perhaps mutually beneficial offering from MRM would be bundled packages. For example, you might offer a sliding scale of increasing discounts for buying multiple items from your line, such as a conversion wiring harness, TFI Module kit, air conditioning hookups, radiator cowl cover, thermostat housing, etc. Seems to me that a competitively priced, complete package of "handling the details" on the conversion would be an attractive option for some builders. Just thinking out loud. Like you need my help, LOL.

Works for me also, Jason. If you would decide to do what Sunshine Guy suggests, I would be your first customer!
