my 5.0L donor is SD; want to convert to MAF--harness options?

Hello, everyone. My 5.0L Miata project (which has sat idle for over a year now) is about to get underway again... I think. Anyway, my donor car was an '88 LX with the speed density setup. I need to convert to a mass airflow setup so the computer will properly handle my E303 cam which I installed during my shortblock rebuild.

I can find used MAF harnesses on eBay, of course, but they seem to always be so spendy. Is there a lower cost alternative? As I surf Summit's web site, I see there are a couple brands of MAF conversion kits which will graft into my SD harness and thus allow me to switch to an A9L computer (which also commands a bit of coin). Is this a viable option? Or would doing such a harness conversion be a bad idea for some reason that is unknown to me? My donor car ran when I bought it, and there didn't seem to be any electrical problems, so I wouldn't mind reusing my SD harness rather than just throwing it out.

If anyone has converted a SD engine harness to MAF, I'd love to hear about your experience. Thanks for sharing.

My suggestion....

Dump the EFI, the computer, the wiring harness......buy a Holley carb and intake, install and forget all of that other unnecessary crap.....save time, money and headache

It would be nice if I could do this, but local smog laws dictate otherwise. I'm allowed to delete the EGR, but that's all. The EFI, cats, O2 sensors and air pump all must remain intact and prove themselves functional.

Never, Ever Get rid of EFI for a carbon-maker. EFI doesn't get out of adjustment and is actually easier to work on. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool or a liar. :D Take your pick.

Dont even think about dropping the efi. Its the only way to fly...Here is a guy in South Carolina that buys wrecked 5.0's Give him a call and speak to Justin. He may be able to help. He provided me with a bunch of items I needed. Worth a try. It is a brother operation out of a barn like building.

All you need is a 1989-1993 EEC-IV ECU, a MAF meter, some wire with the correct pins attached, & a set of wiring diagrams. All that you are actually doing is adding a few wires to the existing spaces on the ECU plug. In 1988 the cars with California emissions were MAF cars. Pretty easy task once you sit down & read over the diagrams. Now, getting the A/C to work, that's another story.

AC is a piece of cake. Literally one wire splice under the dash and grafting the ford compressor plug onto the Mazda compressor lead does it. As far as the Speed density thing goes, I would just sell the SD harness on ebay for about $50 and pick up a Mass air one for $100 and then have me modify it for $200. All you'd need is a mass air computer (about $100 on eBay) and a Mass air meter (Stock diameter ones can be found on a few different Ford's in yards for under $30).

There's a thread over at the Mustang Corral titled "Junk Yard Horsepower" that has a lot of interchange information about this stuff. Often buying an part that originated on something other than a Mustang will save you a lot of money with this kind of stuff.
