Question Toyo proxes T1R

Has anyone had these tires?

I wore out my Hankook rs2's last summer, they were soft, and i wasn't nice...

Anyhow, I'm okay with them not being as sticky as the rs2's were. The car will be used on the street only and only in good weather, unless i happen to get caught in a sudden shower.

The reviews on 1010 tires seem to be mostly good. I have 15x8 6Ul wheels and as of now am considering 4 new 215 45 15 T1R's, another option being 205 50 15. I'll double check with 1010 tires before ordering and make sure the fit will be ok. (949 racing site says those sizes should fit)

Do you think I'll notice much difference between that size and the 225 50 15 (rear) and 225 45 15 (front) RS2's that i had before? Those sizes aren't available in the T1R's, and the RS3's are a few months from availability which rules them out for me this season.

Any other tires available from the tire rack or 1010 tires that i should consider?

Thanks for the input
John

You may want to check out Toyo R888's or the RA 1's.
My car is strictly a track car. I use the RA1's shaved to 3/32 on track and I use the R888's in the rain and in the dry when I don't feel like swapping tires. Either 1 of these would be good for you. Obviously you would not shave the RA1's.

looked at the R888's before, but for some reason i kinda got the feeling they are more suited to a track car? i could be wrong.

The RA-1's ive never heard of before, the do seem like an option, however this worries me :

Consumer Advisory and Safety Information:

1. The tread compound on the Proxes RA-1 is designed to operate under racing conditions.
2. To achieve optimum adhesion levels the tread must operate within a narrow temperature range.
3. This temperature range is very difficult to achieve under legal and normal street operating conditions.

(taken from 1010tires description page)

Do you think this would be an issue for a street only car?

again, thanks for the input

I'm fully expecting to have to spend a thousand or more on tires every year or almost certainly every second year for this car. I'm not necessarily looking to find the "perfect" tire for me on the first try, I'm just hoping that if im heading in the direction of buying a piece of crap someone can give me a heads up!

Its not the end of the world, but spending a season on shitty tires probably wouldn't be much fun.
Just looking to hear thoughts on tires that have worked, or more importantly not worked for some of you.

thanks

jwmezzanotte,
You're right the RA1's and 888's are used by us on the track. But, I know a lot of guys that use the 888's on the street and track as well as the RA1's unshaved on the street.
I'm guessing you must have looked at Tire Rack's site. I typically use their site especially looking at the user reviews of tires. I have a few other toys and am constantly buying tires and I don't think I've ever gone wrong by using the Tire Rack site as a guide. I've got a 350z conv., a 300zx conv, a boxster, 230sl conv, 2 Miata track cars, an outback a pacifica and a windstar. And I don't believe you have to spend anywhere near a grand or so on tires every year unless you're going to street race and burn them up from traffic light to traffic light. I've had real good luck with the Kumho Ectsa MX on my Miata and my Z. Kumho makes some really good tires and fairly inexpensive. I've seen many comparisons in various car magazines comparing expensive tires to lower priced tires and there is no guarantee that a higher priced tire will give you better performance. The comparo's I've seen typically give the edge to the lower priced tire. So, don't automatically think because it costs more it's better. Check out each tire you're considering before laying out the $.

Im going to go and check out those other tires you suggested, and look around a bit more. I'll be ordering some this week.

just so i understand, are you saying that the T1R's would not likely be what im looking for? Or were you just suggesting some others?

thanks

I'm kinda looking back and forth between the T1R's and the RA1's now.

The T1R's are about $20/tire cheaper (price is not my main concern), but im thinking the RA1's in 225 45 15 would be a better size tire for me than the T1R's 215 45 15?

Leaning toward the RA1's now because of the size available.

appreciate the thoughts!
And i don't plan to intentionally destroy a set of tires a year, what i meant was that worst case, if i end up with tires i don't like i can just make do, use them up, lesson learned and try again next season
Just wanted some thoughts from anyone who may have already tried a given tire, no point in repeating something that's known not to work.

btw, i always liked the 300zx!!! Its one nice looking car!

It's kind of ironic. I am now looking for track tires for my V8. Have not had a chance yet to figure out what I want. I'd love to be able to stay with my 15" wheels but I need to do more research now on 15" vs. 16" on my V8. It's a stock 302 and is carbureted. Have no idea what kind of power it's putting down to the wheels. Hope to get it dynoed in the next few weeks before I make any decisions re:mods. But, now I need to figure out tire sizes before my next track date. I got it with 225-50-16 Goodrich T/A R1 on front and a Kumho 265-45-16 in the rear. The rears barely fit under the flared fenders. But these tires are old and I don't trust them. Good luck with your tire search.

Got Insurance on the car today, and took it for a little spin on the remains of the RS2's.

I forgot how much damn fun this car was in the 8 months or so its been hiding from the weather!!!
Cant wait for the new tires and better weather to show up (its been pretty good lately)

I'll put up some pictures in a couple weeks when the new tires are on and ive got it all cleaned up
So much fun!!

Thumbs down

So i ordered the T1R's, unfortunately they can only source two!

Now im looking into some other options.
I'm still interested in the Toyo RA-1's in 225 45 15, the only reason i backed out and went with the T1R's was because a rep at 1010 tires informed me that their tread wear would be even faster than the Hankook Ventus RS2's i had last year.
At this point summer is coming soon and i care less and less about tread life. Just want my car on the road!

Just emailed 1010tires back, hopefully the RA-1's are still available. If not Im going to need to look in some different sizes.
Any ideas on what i could get away with? I have flares on the rear, but id prefer to go with 4 tires in one size so i can rotate them as they wear.

Would 205 50 15's fit on a miata? If so that would open up a few options for me.
Lesson learned, start sourcing tires some time before june!!!

Default stock 16x6.5 rims

Hey guys have you found the widest tire that will fit in a NB car with stock 16 inch rims? I'm not a road racer but will take it down the quarter a few times so I'm looking for a street tire with some grip and width.
