Hard top only?

A miata is advertised as hard top only. Were miatas sold like this or do you think the previous owner remove the soft top.

All came with soft top, some had the hard top option as well as the soft top. If hard top only, someone removed the soft top to save weight most likely.

I've seen them advertised that way when the soft top is ripped up. I pulled my softtop out two years ago and bolted my hardtop on so I guess mine is a "hard top only" also...

Ya know, I believe that there was one offering with hardtop only - the Club Sport in '01 or so. Very few of these came in the US. I think they were only offered in white. I knew a girl in Seattle who had picked one up used when it was about 2 yrs old.

So, back to the OP, 99.9% over the past 20+ yrs had soft tops :)

Any 1994 to 1997 R package could also be ordered that way. I don't think many were though. You're also correct about the club sport. I know someone who HPDE's a very clean white one.

Good to know, I've learned something once again!

They did make miata coupes. But I don't think they ever came to the US.

HSVMX5 Feb 14, 2013 12:14 PM

Yeah, they made a coupe fixed roof, but pretty sure they were JDM spec only, in RS form, rear and expensive, $20,000 USD or higher from the ones I have seen.

Have been contemplating bringing on here and doing a conversion on it, just for the rarity if nothing else, but to be honest, I don't think Mazda did a very good job on them.

It wasn't like the car was redesigned to be a fixed roof coupe, they just basically weilded a tin top to the body, so it still has the extra strengthing in place for the convertible (making it heavier than the convertible, instead of lighter) and all the rear parcel shelf etc is still in place like it would be if you just removed the softtop, so looks a bit random behind the drivers seat. However they do look awesome.

I think that was an NB coupe concept car that was out a while ago.

here is about the only information that I can find on them, I think the limited run was about 1000 cars in japan

Mazda Roadster Coupe
Mazda Engineering and Technology Co. Ltd. (Mazda E&T), a division of Mazda Japan, produced a limited run of Mazda Roadsters for the Japanese market with a permanent fixed hardtop roof. The body structure was reworked to incorporate the roof for a substantial increase in chassis rigidity and a weight increase of 10 kg. A range of models were produced, from a basic 1.6 L version, to heavily restyled boutique models. No Roadster Coupes were exported, though an example upgraded to Mazdaspeed specifications was shown to international audiences.

And here is an articule that was done on the NA concept coupe, so Mazda were playing around with the idea for a while, dunno why the didn't make the NA coupe, or export the NB coupe.
