Default California swap questions

I've done some googling on the subject just wondering if someone could enlighten me a little more. I'm aware the engine has to be of the same year so does that just mean the engine block has to be out of that year? what if it were to be a an aftermarket engine block? the miata im using is a 93 and im using a ford 302 so that means it has to be out of a 93 foxbody even when 87-93 are essentially the same aside from MAF I live in illinois and planning on moving to california in the fall and would like to take my car with me otherwise i'll have to sell before i get any farther in the project..

I may be wrong, but I think that you can use a 93,94,or 95 5.0 from a CAR with ALL of the emission equipment that came with that year engine. If you are planning on using an install kit from Monster Miata, call Martin & he can give you the real correct info. that you seek.

Thanks for your input tbone I'll try and get in contact with martin see if he cant enlighten me. Because I guess I'm really just wondering if there is a way to cheat it. Like say using a block from an earlier year and just running all the emissions equipment from 93 94-95.

If you owned a 1993 Mustang in California could you pull out the block and replace it with an aluminum one? If you could what would happen if you latter used that car as a donor in a 1993 Miata?

I've often wondered the same thing. I imagine that if it looks like the right driveline and you have a VIN from a crushed Mustang you can produce you'd be fine. I live in the Commonwealth of PA so I could very well be wrong.

I am going through the CA SMOG and registration process right now. It is not fun. First, EVERY aftermarket part requires a CARB number. Parts must have a part # that matches the CARB certification document, i.e. Holly Systemmax intake, AFR aluminum heads, headers, etc. Ideally, your car must have identical Smog control as your 1993 5.0 Mustang. My car has cats, 02 sensors. and has passed the SMOG, but the car must still be inspected by the Referee, The referee tells me a 1993 mustang has four cats, I'm missing two precats. No wonder my car has been registered in Washington State and Arizona. Also, have you painted over or scraped off the Federal Certification Label? CA verifies the VIN as well. Good luck. Johnd
