The official show us your tips thread!
OK here's the deal. I'm running a single 3" dump and I don't think it's fooling anyone that the car is the super sleeper it is.
http://i62.tinypic.com/hv9rtg.jpg I do have a pipe hiding under the valance on the driver side that is 3 1/2 but it doesn't show because at the time I was too cheap to buy a tip. http://i59.tinypic.com/168iedv.jpg So I want to see some duels and shots of how you cut them in to join the ranks of cars with proper duel exhaust out the back. |
This is how mine were done, but I'm trimming the bumper. Basically connecting the two current cut outs. Possibly a bit more to make it flow the way I want it. Depending on how it looks at that point I may have a muffler shop tuck the tips up higher and suck them in more (they stick too far out imo)

A shot of my tips.

2-1/4" duals with X pipe, Super Turbo mufflers, and 3.5" stainless tips.
I went to the exhaust shop to replace its former Flowmasters, with the thought in mind to substitute 2.5" tips for the 3" it had then. I like the overall conservative/stealth look of the car. Two techs at the shop convinced me it wouldn't look right with 2.5" tips because the tips should fill the bumper cut-outs. That's how I ended up with the 3.5". Jedi mind trick... It looks fine, but I still think I'd like the smaller tips on a "sleeper style" theme. |

Here's my Monster set up: dual Magnaflow polished tips on the back of twin Flowmaster Super40 mufflers poking out through a Duraflex "Wizdom" rear bumper. Pipes are 3" front to back. Claim to fame: according to Jim Stainer, this is "probably the best sounding small block ever built" :smilie_daumenpos::smilie_daumenpos: (credit for the build, the awesome sound and this particular photo go to PO coloskydiver)

Any film clips with sound??
|
LOL +1 to a sound clip!! I bet that baby is sweet!!!
|
Sound clip:
This is the one that, quite frankly, clinched the sale for me. I must have listened to this about 12,000 times before I finally heard it person. And then I listened to it for three and a half days on the road from Denver to Ottawa and - wow - it never, never got old. Can't wait till spring! :eek3dance: |

I've got a set of 1"NPT oil pan inspection plugs and bungs welded directly in front of my two Borla ProXS mufflers:
http://mccullyracingmotors.weebly.co...278200.jpg?563 I can remove the two plugs in under 30 seconds with the car on the ground. In-car it sounds like this: I'm not sure how it sounds to others. I only did it because I was tired of hearing the wind noise over my exhaust on track day videos. I also got tired of the S2000's being louder than me... The bungs and plugs were a few bucks each and I had to pay $80 to have them welded in nicely by a race shop I trust. Write up here: http://mccullyracingmotors.weebly.co...exhaust-cutout -Jason |
Jason, thanks for posting the track vids. Doubt I'll ever get the chance to do same so my Walter Mitt-ism is somewhat satisfied every time I tune in to a great track day. Is it me or in the "2013 07 15 DelVal Pocono High Performance Driving School Blue Group V8 Miata" at about 8:56 did the driving tick up to 10-10ths (after the blue Vett passed). Great video by the way.

You know the more I have thought about this over the winter the more I am thinking either no tips at all or something small and black to not stand out. My son has just plan black pipes on his firebird and I like it because it doesn't draw your eyes to it. So I'm kind of thinking maybe less is more to be subtle like the rest of the car... ;)
What do you think? |
Actually I looked at doing that and would really love to! Coming from Camaro world CME is a big deal that a lot of guys pay big bucks for and I really like the look of it too. The problem is what to do with the existing hole in the bumper cover and the trailer hitch is totally in the way. It would be really difficult to do.

RR That nose mounted video looks a lot faster than it is being only 4" off the ground. That year I was still trying to nail down some cooling and handling issues. To keep the temps down I just kept it in 4th the whole time. Thanks though, -Jason |
Anyone still have the cut out scrap from when they cut the bumper cover on the drivers side?
|
just cap it with fibreglass... ?

Better to keep it the same materials if possible. It's possible the bumper cut I would have to make could work to fill the whole too.
It's driving me nuts because the more I think about it the more I think CME would be impossible with the trailer hitch but with the car in storage I can't scope it out! Attachment 6653 It would be a fun tip of the hat to my donor SS though! |

2 tips and a trailer hitch
|
Yeah and that is probably what I'll end up doing. What I'd like to do is center mount like the Camaro above though.
|
Center mount exhaust, side mounted trailer hitch(es)?

+1 I actually looked at doing that when I got the hitch so I didn't have to drag the thing around all the time. Had I made one I probably would have done that but this one was cheap and from a buddy that needed the $$.

I went with a dual staggered tip. Yes, I need to remove the "tow" sticker! LOL. Been too focused on brakes and cooling issues.

OK what do you think 0, 1, 2 or 2 center ya all???
Attachment 6636 Attachment 6637 Attachment 6638 Attachment 6639 AND if 0 or 2 center what do I do with the existing single bumper cut out? |
what would be cool, would be a tip exiting on either side of the license plate...between the plates and the lights. Form trumping function, but would be different.
|
When I made my rocker extensions I came very close to running the exhaust through them in front of the back wheels. I really like the stereo effect of doing it that way but it's considerably more hassle to deal with hwy drone for date nights...

Removed the flowmaster and went with dyno-Maxx, They are not as loud as the flowmasters.

Wow that is one sexy exhaust set up Dave! ^^
|
Thanks! The exhaust was, without a doubt, the most difficult part of my entire build. It started out as a huge box of various mandrel bends and took 3 days straight to build using nothing but a sawzall, a belt sander and a cheap Harbor Freight TIG welder. That photo was taken at the alignment shop right after I got it running. I've since raised the drivers side pipe about 3" as it was hanging a bit too low.
|
I like how you ran it thru the subframe. Nice work.

My vote *definitely* goes for the 2-centre option. As you'll need a centre cut-out to do this (pill-shaped, I presume, in keeping with the otherwise round lines of the NA), I'd suggest taking the rear clip to a shop that can the cut-out and fill over the right side cut out. Alternatively, consider the Duraflex Wizdom after-market rear clip, which will give you wide open space for centre exit tips (I have this clip on my car but the FlowMasters are - I think - too big to be arranged with centre exits). If interested, the Wizdom rear clip is currently on sale at GoMiata (just sayin', no connection).
So my plan is to sell off the genuine Flyin Miata 3.5" stainless tip and put a pair of black 4" tips that don't stick out as far. With any luck I'll pocket about 10 bucks out of the venture to boot. |

After a year of pondering I finally did the tips. I didn’t want them to be a focal point that would jump out at you so I went with black rather than chrome. I wanted to fill up the bumper cut out and keep with the exaggerated cartoon character theme so I used the biggest pipe that would fit in the cut out. So a hunk of 4" pipe, can of high temp paint and 4 clamps got me pretty decent tips for 35 bucks. :)
