The official show us your tips thread!

OK here's the deal. I'm running a single 3" dump and I don't think it's fooling anyone that the car is the super sleeper it is.

I do have a pipe hiding under the valance on the driver side that is 3 1/2 but it doesn't show because at the time I was too cheap to buy a tip.

So I want to see some duels and shots of how you cut them in to join the ranks of cars with proper duel exhaust out the back.

Gator Bait 12-02-2014 11:48 AM

This is how mine were done, but I'm trimming the bumper. Basically connecting the two current cut outs. Possibly a bit more to make it flow the way I want it. Depending on how it looks at that point I may have a muffler shop tuck the tips up higher and suck them in more (they stick too far out imo)

2.5" polished stainless Magnaflows with high flow cats, x-pipe, & 3" tips.

2-1/4" duals with X pipe, Super Turbo mufflers, and 3.5" stainless tips.

I went to the exhaust shop to replace its former Flowmasters, with the thought in mind to substitute 2.5" tips for the 3" it had then. I like the overall conservative/stealth look of the car.

Two techs at the shop convinced me it wouldn't look right with 2.5" tips because the tips should fill the bumper cut-outs. That's how I ended up with the 3.5". Jedi mind trick...

It looks fine, but I still think I'd like the smaller tips on a "sleeper style" theme.

Here's my Monster set up: dual Magnaflow polished tips on the back of twin Flowmaster Super40 mufflers poking out through a Duraflex "Wizdom" rear bumper. Pipes are 3" front to back. Claim to fame: according to Jim Stainer, this is "probably the best sounding small block ever built" :smilie_daumenpos::smilie_daumenpos: (credit for the build, the awesome sound and this particular photo go to PO coloskydiver)

Any film clips with sound??

charchri4 02-15-2015 10:50 PM

LOL +1 to a sound clip!! I bet that baby is sweet!!!

This is the one that, quite frankly, clinched the sale for me. I must have listened to this about 12,000 times before I finally heard it person. And then I listened to it for three and a half days on the road from Denver to Ottawa and - wow - it never, never got old.

Can't wait till spring! :eek3dance:

I've got a set of 1"NPT oil pan inspection plugs and bungs welded directly in front of my two Borla ProXS mufflers:

http://mccullyracingmotors.weebly.co...278200.jpg?563

I can remove the two plugs in under 30 seconds with the car on the ground.

In-car it sounds like this:

I'm not sure how it sounds to others. I only did it because I was tired of hearing the wind noise over my exhaust on track day videos. I also got tired of the S2000's being louder than me...

The bungs and plugs were a few bucks each and I had to pay $80 to have them welded in nicely by a race shop I trust.

Jason, thanks for posting the track vids. Doubt I'll ever get the chance to do same so my Walter Mitt-ism is somewhat satisfied every time I tune in to a great track day. Is it me or in the "2013 07 15 DelVal Pocono High Performance Driving School Blue Group V8 Miata" at about 8:56 did the driving tick up to 10-10ths (after the blue Vett passed). Great video by the way.

You know the more I have thought about this over the winter the more I am thinking either no tips at all or something small and black to not stand out. My son has just plan black pipes on his firebird and I like it because it doesn't draw your eyes to it. So I'm kind of thinking maybe less is more to be subtle like the rest of the car... ;)

Personally, I'd be pretty partial to a pair of center exit satin or matt black tips. Would look totally stealthy bad-ass with your paint job!

charchri4 02-19-2015 10:46 PM

Actually I looked at doing that and would really love to! Coming from Camaro world CME is a big deal that a lot of guys pay big bucks for and I really like the look of it too. The problem is what to do with the existing hole in the bumper cover and the trailer hitch is totally in the way. It would be really difficult to do.

I highly recommend a track day for cars like ours. The $200 - $400 or so sounds pretty high but when compared to the cost of the speeding ticket you'll get opening up a V8 Miata on the street its about the same (and comes with no points on your licence).

That nose mounted video looks a lot faster than it is being only 4" off the ground. That year I was still trying to nail down some cooling and handling issues. To keep the temps down I just kept it in 4th the whole time.

Thanks though,
-Jason

Anyone still have the cut out scrap from when they cut the bumper cover on the drivers side?

sebz 02-23-2015 11:09 AM

just cap it with fibreglass... ?

Better to keep it the same materials if possible. It's possible the bumper cut I would have to make could work to fill the whole too.

It's driving me nuts because the more I think about it the more I think CME would be impossible with the trailer hitch but with the car in storage I can't scope it out!
Attachment 6653

It would be a fun tip of the hat to my donor SS though!

2 tips and a trailer hitch

charchri4 02-24-2015 08:43 AM

Yeah and that is probably what I'll end up doing. What I'd like to do is center mount like the Camaro above though.

MX-Brad 02-24-2015 10:51 AM

Center mount exhaust, side mounted trailer hitch(es)?
