Default Dumps before axle on LS1 car?

So with all of the ls1 cars I have seen on here, I have not seen many people speak of just dumping the exhaust right before the axle. I have seen it on a few 5.0 swap cars, but never on an ls1 car. Is there a reason why no one ever does that? I have been tossing it around as a possibility, even though I really like the look of dual tips on any car. I know it would be inherently louder, but it would also eliminate the need to snake around the axles, or get the cv boots overheated.

Opinions?

The biggest issue I see, other than the noise, is ground clearance. You would have to route the pipes under the frame stiffeners, effectively losing at least 2 1/2-3" of ground clearance, not a trivial matter especially if you want the car lowered at all. Take a look at your frame stiffeners, usually there is evidence of dragging on speed bumps, etc. Rare to see perfectly smooth stiffeners. Also, since it's often an open car, the fumes can be an issue.

You could just put turndowns on the pipe and loose no ground clearance? Also, my car has a hardtop, and will have it 95% of the time.

I had a 3" dump before the rear axle on my car when it was a turbo'd 4cyl. It is now on my cousin's Miata as seen here.

I am planning on dumping my LS right from the engine bay.

See I think if you can deal with the volume, that is a good option.

Here is my solution.

Opened, the dumps sound great. I also kept the left tip turned down so the car looks stock from the back.

Thats with a Getrag though, and it still makes you have to get around the diff and cv's. Not that I don't like your setup

I designed it this way so that when my car hits 25 years old, I can remove cats and dump exhaust out the side of the car. Basically make my curved down dumps straight.

Yeah that is what I am considering because I don't have emissions. I wont even be running cats to begin with, I am planning on an x-pipe, and either a couple small mufflers/resonators, or one dual in dual out muffler.

Im having this debate now as well. Id love to have a quieter car but its nearly impossible with a boss frog mounted 8.8.

I drove mine to work with just the cats on the ends of the headers and that was more than enough reliving highschool for me!

There is some practical considerations to dumping it there. That is already a place sensitive to heat and dumping exhaust near the gas tank and CV joints is putting a lot of hot air in a bad spot. If you get stuck in traffic the thing will gas you out and I think it would be difficult to find a muffler that would fit and not drone you to death. Basically you only have room for glass packs or header inserts in the tunnel.

And lastly your body is so clean and high end and has all the makings to be a thunderbolt level build. Is it really worth it to cut this corner on a couple of feet of pipe here? And considering I'm the king of road kill corner cuts...

I agree with King of Road Kill. I sat under the car yesterday measuring and trying to find a way to run sidepipes. Just doesnt seem to be a safe/cheap/quiet way to do it within reason.

I yanked my subframe last night and its going in for surgery this weekend.

I was sort of playing around with doing an Eleanor pipe and cutting the floor just in front of the seat.....Tough going that is for sure!
If you got it done it would be loud and would drone pretty good, and dealing with the heat would be a real issue..best case.

I ran small resonators and turndowns off the v8r long tubes. Dumped right around where the seats where under the car. Very loud and quite obnoxious. Dirt and exhaust gases always flying up. Ears ringing after long drives. Not very enjoyable honestly.
