v8 roadster aluminum oil pan

So i just recieved my lsx V8 roadsters aluminum oil pan. i went to install it and the sump that comes with the kit is hitting to bottom of the oil pan not alowing the oil pan to seat almost a 1/4 inch. do i need to take off the studd/crank bolt and put the sump mount under it???? has anyone had this problem or did i maybe get the wrong part? there are no directions with these v8 roadster parts

You have to trim the ls windage tray so it will clear the new pan. You should also confirm the clearance between the oil pick up tube and pan. Do a google search but I seem to remember it being somewhere around 1/4 inch or less. My pick up tube needed one small washers worth of spacing to get it perfect.

i took the windage tray out and the pick up tube was still hitting the bottom of the oil pan

Hmm, not sure then. Maybe bend the tube a bit more? My ls3 pick up didnt need any altering besides an extra washer.

Sorry your quota of questions is used up until you do a build thread with photos for us!

OK I'll be nice I had to bend mine to fit right too but this is the perfect question to be asking in a build thread because you would probably get more responses. Photos of where it is hitting or what is happening would go a long way too.

If you have questions on how to do that or update your signature check this thread out. https://www.v8miata.net/site-tips-su...ps-tricks-329/

Mine did not need any trimming at all, not sure why people think it needs a trim - the windage tray doesnt protrude enough to touch. Are you sure you aren't hitting a trapdoor? Put some grease in the pan or on the pickup and find out where its touching. If you are having issues, get in touch with Kevko, they make the pans.

I used play-do during mock up. And it was the ls windage tray stopping the pan from bolting up.

Get the correct tray. An LS3 tray will hit, an f body tray will not. This shows the difference - just one bank shorter. Same as cutting the ls3 tray.

So this wouldve been the post to put up before saying you dont know why people trim pans. :ugh:

+1 the F body tray doesn't have to be trimmed.

It's an ls1 swap pan, not an ls3 or an ls2 swap pan.

All ls1s have the short tray, and will never need to be trimmed. Potato potato, lol.

Truthfully if cutting a windage tray is the worst thing any of us have to do, its a good swap.

Removing windage tray instead of cutting?

Looking at the Moroso steel oil pan, I wonder if the windage tray is even needed? In the shallow part of the pan you may have to trim the windage tray because it is so close. In the deepest part of the pan, it is covered and this cover nearly touches the windage tray. Since the tray's purpose is to keep the crank out of the oil accumulating in the pan, isn't it redundant? It seems like the shallow pan and the cover in the deep end are doing the same job.
