Drag Strip Times and Skid Pad Numbers?
I'd like to quantify the performance of some V8 Miatas. If you've actually run yours at a drag strip (of any length), generated some skid pad numbers, or done some other measured performance work including dyno runs or, say, hit 180 mph at the Silver State, would you please post them with a brief description of your car's drive train and other significant mods?
I know the performance of a small, light car with big power is impressive. I'd just like to learn HOW impressive! Thanks very much, Lynn B. |
I have an MX5 with a 04 LS1, with no mods to the motor at the moment, and all the air intake and the exhaust pretty restrictive, it has been dyno'd at 220kw (295hp) at the rear wheels. It runs a T56 gearbox and a 3.09 diff out of a Holden HSV (similar to Pontiac GTO coupe).
I did a 1/4 mile run at the local drag strip, and ran a 13.4 with a terminal speed of 181kph (112mph) on completely the wrong set of tyres, wrong suspension setup, and not a great deal of traction for the first 5 secs or so of the run. Think with just getting the right sort of tyres and suspension setup, it should run mid to high 12's without any mods to the motor |
I may let my dad take the car over to Jersey and drag race it at some point after we rebuild the t5. It's doing fine for a $100 Craigslist transmission now at hpde's but I don't want to tempt fate with it.
My current dyno numbers (mustang dyno) are 270 rwhp/309 torque. Those numbers were attained using a completely untuned a9l on a modified 331. Since then I've swaped in a ms2 ecu and 32.8 pound injectors which should give me a little more power. -Jason |
Drag Times
After working out some bugs I was able to turn a 12:01 @ 118mph. I'm looking at something to get that 11 sec time.
I have a 6.0L LSX motor with a mild 554 lift Comp Cam and the L92 heads, hooker shorty headers, 6spd Tremic trans, 8.8 IRS with 3:73 gears. |
Thanks for the responses, everyone. I appreciate it very much. Just what I needed.
Thanks again, Lynn B. |
Mine dynoed at 382hp & 376tq on a dynojet at 8psi. It will be re-tuned with a 1995 ECU, 12psi,& intercooled in the future.

1991 Miata, 327 small block chevy, carbureted, Muncie 4 speed - close ratio, 3.27:1 rear
She put down 331 hp and 419 lbft torque. |

Injected Engineering http://www.injectedengineering.com/ is installing an air-to-air system on a car now. The blower has been fitted, & it is now in the fab shop. Here is a LONG thread about one dude's intercooler evolution DIY Kenne Bell Fox air to air intercooler build list. - Ford Mustang Forums : Corral.net Mustang Forum that might interest you. Although the guys at Injected have installed one of these set-ups on a Mountaineer, I think that the lack of space under the hood will be a challenge. I am waiting to see what they come up with. I may resort to using a water/meth injection kit.

Right now I'm getting 370 rwhp on a Dynapac (360 on a Donojet) NA and I can not even do a 2nd gear roll on without getting out of shape which makes the hp rather useless within the city of Los Angeles, This is my daily transpotation so I will remain AI until I get another car for basic transportation. Good luck, I hope you can do it as I may copy your setup in the future! Paul |
Mine is set up for street/road course. Drag raced twice, broke half shafts on second launch both times. Ran 11.4 @ 121, 1.8s 60ft. Car will never see a drag strip again. Miata's make terrible dragsters.
Really shines on road course. We don't time our laps (drive for fun), but can say that we don't get passed unless pros are there practicing in their race cars on a fun day. |

What have you installed for a rear end? What axles? Is it a 7.5 ford? Most Miata can't get a good enough grip to break and axle. What ties did you use? Carlisle |

First broken axle was a Cobra axle. Second was from Martin (Monster Miata) his M5 alloy, I think it's called. Currently still using Martin's axles. Strongest 8.8 axles we have found/used. We did not break the CV's, just twisted/snapped the axle. If you know Martin, he has the broken pieces. Sent it to him for his supplier to see. They were shocked that we broke it. Second time, the most recent break, was around 4 years ago. Am sure he will recall the event, though. A VHT prepped track & 275 slicks on the rear combined w/ slight wheel hop (pulsing) @ launch can break the half shaft. This can be avoided by setting up the rear for drag racing, but, launching on an IRS is less than ideal for drag racing. We were invited to track by manual shift association while @ car shows both times that we went. Otherwise, would have never drag raced the Miata. |
