Drivetrain
so i have an 85 mustang that was recently in an accident and was debating on wheather to get a new mustang body or to make a monster miata. Now i really wanna do the monster miata but i was told that the miata drivetrain would not work with mustang transmission. I would like to know from ppl that have actually done this if this is true or not...will the miata drivetrain work with the t-5 transmission or would i have to get a custom drivetrain?

Drivetrain meaning what? The rear, driveshaft and cv shafts all get replaced. You use your motor trans and engine harness.
Your more than welcome to swing by my shop since your in de. |
The engine and trans will work. The wire loom will need modified (I can help with that). You also will need a custom driveshaft (I sell them) and the independent rear diff and axle assemblies from a 1996 or so thunderbird.
Most everything else needed (headers, radiator, fabricated assemblies, clutch hydraulics, etc.) comes from a $4000 kit sold by Monster Miata in CA. I would look up that site first. If you want to get an idea of what you are potentially getting yourself into you can buy just the kit's instruction manual for $75 and look through it. If you later decide to purchase the kit Monster Miata will take the $75 off the price if you already purchased the instructions. I purchased my manual almost a year before ordering my first kit. It, and a few build sites, really helped me decide if I could handle it. Links to my four build galleries can be found at my site. The link to my site is in my signature. If you have a running Mustang drive train already you could get this project done for under $6000 or so (assuming you find a very cheap Miata). Good luck, -Jason McCully |
