How to: Sway bar stanchions for a 5.0 swap
7 Attachment(s)
This is a pretty easy one, figured I'd contribute something for those researching a diy swap. This can be done before you start to save project down time.
These measure 5 5/8" end to end I just used whatever metal I had lying around that fit my parameters 3/16" base plates 3/32x1.5" box 7/16" holes https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1441590650 https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1441590650 https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1441590650 https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1441590650 https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1441590650 https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1441590650 Didnt like the curved end so I only did that one https://www.v8miata.net/attachment.p...ine=1441590650 |
Wow very nice work and great write up!

If an LS swap guy can chime in with the differences that would be great for someone doing research down the line

Nice writeup. Just wondering since I haven't done the swap myself, are these necessary for the 5.0 swap? Do they just move the swaybar down to make some extra room for the lower sitting engine?
|
Required for 5.0 to clear the harmonic balancer.

You can always just run a BMW bar and save some hassle. Balancer clearance built in. Pictured on my exocet, but same concept applies. This way you're getting the space down in the bar itself, instead of a flexible mount that sees twisting leverage.

I've never heard of this fix before, would you happen to have a year and model of the car or a part number? Thanks!

Any 92-95 3 series BMW bar works. This is a 25mm (just under 1in) from a 325i, fits in 1inch energy suspension miata sway bushings.
Ebay. $30-50 Here's a super old thread that has some more stuff about it http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=404786 |
I already had some money in my sway bars, but I kind of wonder about the flex in these mounts and that bmw sway may bar may be the ticket
|
I'm definitely worried about that. My stock sway bar mounts already broke once with the stock engine. I'm going to design new mounts that are stronger because I know that these stand offs are going to put a greater moment on the mounts and it will be a matter of time until they break.
