Default Pipe Dreaming

Hello all,
I'm here because I have this desire to torture myself again with another car project.
I want a sports car that's amazing that I can work on myself, something I've built, something different, but not a trailer queen or 4 wheel HD with chrome all over it. I don't want to care about the paint or the interior. I want a car I can abuse a bit.
I have owned and modified a couple Fox body mustangs in the past and I was once VERY educated on the SBF platform having subscribed to both MM&FF and 5.0 for 4 years or so. All the magazine tests on all the heads, intakes, cams, both EFI and carbureted - I was obsessed. I lacked the disposable income to throw much at the Fox body back then and only did a few head swaps and mods before I came to the realization that the platform has so many weaknesses and would be such a waste of time and money for me, I needed to do something else. I hated the seating position, the brakes, and the boxy look. I saved some money and decided to build a Factory Five Roadster. That took me a year to complete. I put a 408W in it I assembled myself eventually. After having 2 kids I sold that because I could never drive it! My wife didn't like riding in it either.
Now I am thinking it would be cool to learn about the GM LS series motors and put one in an old, used, Miata. My idea is to find a mid 90's car that's a fairly used up and make it into a streetable track car. This won't be a pretty, polished, don't touch it type project. I'm more interested gutting the interior, adding a cage, race seats, 5 point harnesses, great brakes, wide wheels and tires, and drop in a low budget, used LS series motor making around 400hp. Maybe it will happen somehow.

There is a YouTube video series where a guy is doing a build that sounds very close to what you are describing.
His is definitely a cheap swap that is built for the track but technically street legal.
