Third Miata, First V8

Just thought I'd stop in and introduce myself here.

My name is Travis and I am in the process of gathering parts(and a car for that matter) to build my first V8 conversion miata. I am 27 years old, mechanical engineer, and have what I would say is considerably higher than average wrenching skills. I have previously had two miatas that I used as daily drivers, one was rear ended and the other I sold because of an offer I couldn't turn down. At this point I am sourcing parts, so far I have bought an LS1/T56 with harness and computer from a 17k mile camaro SS that was vandalized, and a rear end out of an 03 cobra. I am hopefully going to buy a car to put them in tommorow.

Anyways, just saying hello

Cool. Best year ls1 and the best year cobra rear. Good luck
Axles are expensive btw

And your location?

Have you already got the cobra rear end? it has 31 spline axles that are larger in diameter than the tbird-cougar 28 spline. The larger axles usually interferes with the shock mount on the control arm. But it is possible to relocate it with some welding/fabrication.

OTOH. Welcome!

I am located in Marion Illlinois, and yeah I've already got the rear end, got the whole thing for 400 bucks. I knew that there were issues surrounding the axles, worst case scenario Ill pull the 31 spline track lock and put in a 28.

You could just use 28 spline side gears or swap out the tripod housings on your axles.

No kidding Marion IL? That name jumped out because that's were I'm planning to stay on the way to the V8 meet in Atlanta. Care for a bum on your couch? LOL just kidding but I am a drummer so had to say that. It would be fun to connect and grab a burger or something though.

Sounds like you have a good start going and I am really glad you are here!

Jim,

I have read your blog end to end three times now and still have some questions so I'd love to grab a bite and pick your brain when you are on the way through, Ill PM you my number and we can see what will work out.

V8droptop, forgive my lack of knowledge, what is a t2r?

charchri4 03-03-2015 10:58 AM

LOL well now you know how not to do it anyway! We'll connect for sure and I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Oh forgot to post I believe t2r was the Ford build code for the torsen that came in the Mustang Cobra IRS cars.
