New to v8 miata

Hi guys! Not to be a dick by not using the search function, but I wouldn't even know where to start.

I am currently in cahoots whether to build a forged 4 cylinder monster, or LS3 swap for my miata.

Does anyone here know a place or person that will do an LS3 swap to a 97 Miata for 15k?

your best bet for that price is not to go with the LS3 which would cost 7K in its self but to go with the LS1.. LS2 or even the L33 einges all of which can be had for 3k or less.... L33 is found in trucks and usually goes for less than a thousand. otherwise the LS3 swap you would be looking at more than 15k in parts eg. LS3 (7k) t56(2500) rear end, kit cost ect.... it all adds up.

If you are looking to spend 25k flyinmiata will do a turnkey solution for you with the LS3

I saw the FlyinMiata option, but that is a bit expensive for me. I don't think I will have that much saved up when I come back to the states.

I was thinking LS3, because if i were to build my 4banger, I was gonna push for 400.....if I go V8, I wanted to push for 500hp. Camms and valve stems/springs and I might be at that power output.

I see LS3's going on ebay for 5k all day long.

I'd think about the engine if someone were for certain they could do the swap for me.
My day is too busy with school and work. 7am - 11pm everyday. I only go home to sleep it seems

back to the states, are you deployed in the military? 400 is easily possible out of the 5.3 L33 setup, ive got 450 to the wheels out of my LS2 with an intake and cam setup, more is easily obtainable with a head swap and other boltons. but hell if you can get an LS3 for 5k go for it!

Prequel2TheSequel 06-05-2010 12:01 PM

yea, in the Marines. I'm currently in Africa, and I hope I can extend for a 2nd tour before coming home so that I can save some money. Soon as I get back I'll be out the military and back to the normal job/student lifestyle.

Just tired of Cobra's trying to race me on the highway on my way to school or work (back in VA). Plus I wanna have the power to backup the aggressiveness of N2 flares :D

haha, i just left DJ, with the 24 MEU right now sitting on the Nassau, who you with?

yeah i know all about the cobras.. its the reason ive got a built c5... lol

Prequel2TheSequel 06-05-2010 01:05 PM

geezz, you have a v8 miata AND a built C5?

Thats hilarious you just left here. I don't see much of the 24th MEU guys except at 11 North when I was back on Camp. Right now I'm out in town for a few months with the seabees (comms guy), then hopefully Kenya. They have beautiful sights over there. All I do here is send in 1 report that takes 15 minutes, then sleep, eat, and lift weights. This deployment is such a vacation!

anyways, *cough *cough v8 miata, yut yut.

I guess you should ask yourself a few questions.

Are you mechanically inclined?

Do you have the ability to do the swap yourself?

Do you have aplace to work on it at?

If you have a 400hp 4 cylinder it will not be reliable for long. So you will need to pay someone to work on it or do it yourself.

If you already have the car and want to do the LS3 swap for under 15k it is possible if you do the work yourself.

So basically what I'm saying is spend more money or do more work. The only other option would be to find a used V8 miata within your price range.

I take it the Ford conversion is out of the question if the LS1 is not an option.

I'm not INclined, but I'm not mechanically declined either. I have my fair share of knowledge when it comes to the mazda parts. I know nothing about domestic though.

I don't have the ability to swap all that stuff myself because I have neither time or the correct tools for it. I have nothing to cut with and nothing to weld with.

My only free days are the weekend, and I'm still usually getting all my schoolwork accomplished then since I am busy with work during the week.

And yes I know a 4 cylinder car producing 400hp won't give me long reliability which is why I chose to try V8 in the first place. I like the LSx swaps due to the chevy engines having better gas mileage and reliability than the ford engines. Never was a big fan of ford.

I know FlyinMiata charges 24k for a swap, but they usually charge a lot anyways. So I was wondering if a smaller shop or individual was able to do for less

Try $29K + a donor Miata:

Don't discount the Ford option. Yes, you may have to live with 25mpg as opposed to 30 but otherwise the Ford conversions hold their own and can be done for under $10K (not counting your donor Miata cost). It can also be argued that doing a Ford conversion may be a little less time consuming if time is an issue for you.

Check out the ones I've done:

Good luck whichever way you go,
