Yes. Most everybody uses the Mustang motors because they are HO motors. Basically the difference is cam, heads, and intake.

So it kind of depends on your personal philosophy.

One way to look at it would be: put the motor in, get the car debugged and reliably drivable, then build/buy your real motor of choice and swap them on a weekend. With the lift and a suitable rollaround table, you can drop the engine/trans in just a few hours. Most all of the hard parts that you will need to buy or build for the initial install will transfer over to the new motor.

I did this a few years ago with a 1993 Tbird rated at 220 hp from the factory, with 173000 miles, thinking it would last long enough to get it sorted out, then it would die and I would swap it for a 347. It's still running, just won't die. It's not an LS whatever, but I really like the sound, and I've got the 347 parts slowly coming together.
