Carb Legal

Tried searching for this and didn't what I was looking for. Looking to do a V8 coyote swap on a miata. I know the 90-95 e rod ls3 motors are good to go. Im a ford guy and wanted to do a coyote swap will it be smog legal since I live in Ca. if any body can give me some info on this or leads to this forum that would be awesome. thank you

You might try on the Miata dot net engine conversion site. I doubt it's been done; all the discussions I recall center around how wide the engine is and how difficult to fit, then there is the additional CARB requirement on top of that. Pushrod 5.0 built to 300 hp, or maybe stroker 331 or 347 might be choices to consider in order to go the Ford route and get more than the 215-225 hp/285-295 tq of the stock pushrod 5.0.

Ok thank you. Ls swap might be the way to go

Is it true to make carb legal the motor of the swap has to be newer than the car itself? Thought I read that somewhere

Varies by state but that's normally the case for starters--engine same year or newer. In some states, after 25 years, regs ease up. CA emissions regs much more stringent, with requirements such as all OEM emissions-related factory components for the new engine being in place--exhaust manifolds, cats, etc. Search tool is your friend.

Here is the one build thread that I am aware of where somebody got CARB certification on an LS conversion recently.
If you are serious about doing a V8 swap in California you might contact that guy directly.
It seems he worked with some shop to get the conversion done.

There is a YouTube video out there somewhere where a guy did a coyote swap into a Miata he was showing off.
Not absolutely sure but it seems like it was part of a video showing various Miata engine swaps.
From what I remember it sounded like a lot of work over and above what it takes to swap an LS into a Miata.
