The project is coming along so nicely. You've out done us all with that Airaid intake too! It looks more massive than the standard Vette intake some of us are using - but yours fits behind the bumper as well. Awesome.

Not certain about the PS pump on short run-time, but I've seen (heard, actually) a neighbor in her SUV riding around this past week with an obviously empty reservoir... Loud and empty - crying for some fluid, but not stopping her!

Will you install rad kit before the first engine start, or not?

Congrats on the progress and nice work!!

I already gave it a loose try with the current starter I had from the F-body, it will be tight, but I can get it in. On the sway bar mounts, I have been saving them to later because of clearance issues I have read about with other parts.

Toysnake, thanks for the kind words, I love the airaid intake. I think I am going to chance it with the ps pump, I won't be running very long so I'm sure it will be fine. As far as the radiator, I will definitely have it in place when I start the car, I just had it out in these pictures to keep from damaging it, its so easy to take in and out that it would be foolish not to.

Travis, per this question in post #24 if you haven't found your answer...

3. Please see the picture below, This piece goes between the front of the intake manifold, and connects to the fuel supply line, can anyone tell me what it is and what you did with it? Obviously it is not used with my new custom fuel line, but I am still wondering.

Simply remove that useless GM stuff, and cap off that nipple on the intake manifold with a correctly sized rubber cap. It also cleans up that good looking LS intake.

I like how you're salvaging other Miatas and using them as templates and sources of ideas for this bad toy you're building.

Keep doing what you're doing!!
I think the line in question is the evap purge solenoid. All you really need to do is leave it there and connect a vacuum line to your stock Miata's charcoal canister. Utilizing the GM valve and Miata canister worked great for me and cuts down on fuel fumes in the garage.

Won't that pull a vacuum on the fuel tank? I plan on putting the miata canister on the vent line for the fuel tank.

So far, for the past 18 months that my V8Roadster has lived in our 2 car garage, I haven't smelled any gas fumes. And I just have a small charcoal canister connected to the fuel tank vent line (from Land Rover/ eBay). Dave's solution may work as well, but I wanted a simple and clean engine bay as possible.

The canister is vented to atmosphere. When the purge valve solenoid is energized, a vacuum is pulled on the canister, drawing fresh air through it and purging the vapors from the charcoal.

This update is all about the starter and wiring. I ended up buying the starter that SupaDupaSteve suggested in his post. I had seen other people talk about the "6.0 starter" but he provided a part number for this 5.3 version(AC Delco 337-1119), and it was reasonably priced at $135 with no core on amazon so I went for it. It came a couple days later, looks great, just like a brand new starter should. For additional clarification from other threads, here are the comparisons of the starters. Obviously these pictures show the stock f-body unit vs. the new AC delco unit.

As is is seen in this picture, the stock unit is about 7.125" long, and the new one is 6.375", and let me tell you, it just barely snakes in there.

And here she is setting in place with the header still hanging down. Something to note is that I was not able to use the factory snap on heat shield for the solenoid off the stock starter, just too tight. One thing I am sure of is that I hope this starter never goes bad, because it will be an absolute bear to change out later. Without the suspension on it wasn't terrible because I was able to get at it really easy from this angle. But once that is on, it will increase the difficulty.

I don't think there is any reason for concern, but as SDS noted, there are 9 teeth on this starter as compared to the typical 11. I have not done any additional research, but just note that if the starter motor has the same amount of torque output, that is a 18.2% reduction in final output.

Now we move onto the wiring portion. I had done all the wiring that I could have beforehand, had everything labeled, etc, so here we go. First of all I needed to find a place to mount the computer, and with that big beautiful small block under the hood, I didn't want it under there taking away from the view if at all possible. I had been considering putting it under the dash on the passenger side in place of the airbag, and with a little persuasion on here I decided to try it. Once again I had the convenience of having a parts car to test my theory on before cutting another big hole in the firewall of my build car. Well as luck would have it, I punched the hole in the parts car just to the left(looking in from the front) of the holes for the AC lines, and it is PERFECT!! Wiring will lay right over the top of the HVAC parts, and the opening for the passenger airbag is basically made to fit the delphi computer from my camaro donor. Here is a picture of the hole location on the build car.

And here are some pictures after I fed the big connectors through. I will have more than enough line to reach the computer mounting location and get past the AC lines without extending any wires.

Don't mind the mess inside, once I have got the wiring all sorted, I will tie it all off and clean/paint/insulate inside.

On a different note, I got my beautiful new axles in the mail on Friday, boy they sure do look nice. On a negative note, they were supposed to come with the 31 spline bolt in inner stubs, but I guess I was a fool to think they would come right the first time......28 spline inners unless I counted wrong all four times on each axle.....Back to playing the waiting game.

Finally, After about 6 hours of wiring, I have all my connections made except the tach, obd2, and the speedo, so this guy wanted to bump test the starter. Here is a video of me bumping the engine, which was a great cap off to the weekend.

All I need to do to try and start her now is put the fuel filler neck back on, and get my radiator hoses sorted out. I found out that the FM V8 cooling kit comes with hoses for the newer LS3 water pump with the drivers side outlet, so obviously my stock water pump won't work for that. I am going to call and see what their options are for hoses, otherwise I am going to have to get the newer pump. Also, when I bump tested it, I couldn't hear my fuel pump kick on, which was surprising? I used the Walboro 255 lph unit, and I figured even with the sound blanket on I would have heard something? Maybe because the tank is empty and its not actually pumping anything?

All right, I watched the starter bump over. You're moving along... Yeah, I don't think I could utilize the FM radiator hoses either. So, I simply took coat hanger wire and duplicated what I wanted the two hoses to look like and carried the wires to my auto parts store where they'll let you browse their selection of hoses to find one really, really close. About $20 later, you'll have the two you need and may have to do some add'l trimming to get the lengths just right -- but super easy. I can look, but my LS2 thread may have the hose numbers from Advanced Auto Parts showing on them.

Just ran out to the car and pulled this number on the upper hose: (D)71267CS Found it here on Dayco website. http://www.daycoproducts.com/part?fi...number%3D71267 Simply had to shorten one end or the other. Easy peasy!
Cannot get to lower hose to see what the heck it was... Sorry!

And yes, the fuel pump is somewhat easy to hear when you turn the key to ON as it primes for about 2 seconds... I'm sure you'll get that sorted out very soon.

Hey thanks for the Help, I actually called FM yesterday and talked to them a little bit. He gave me a part number for a Napa hose for the top, 9030. I ordered it yesterday, hopefully they will get it in today and I can fit it up. The lower hose just looks like it will need some trimming like you said, so I am guessing I am close to good there.

No, I haven't really done enough leg work to ask any questions yet. I went the route of rewiring the miata relay to work with the GM PCM signal, so I need to go through with my meter and make sure I'm getting power where I am supposed to first. Worst case scenario is I'll just wire in a whole new relay and we will be good for sure! This week is really busy for me with my masters, getting finished up for the fall semester so.

My standalone harness has its own fuel pump relay. I gladly ditched the stock one, it's a known failure item. Have you ever seen the movie that Keith from FM made about the Newfoundland rally in his Targa Miata? His fuel pump relay failed and cost him a victory.

Ditto. Has been A-OK ever since. ...Plus, I carry a spare GM/Delphi relay in the trunk just to be certain, lol.

Yeah I have read about that a few different times. I have got all kinds of GM/Ford relays laying around so I may just fashion one of them into it.

Also, the Napa hose worked great for the water pump outlet, it still needs a little trimming but it will be just fine. The lower hose that came with the FM kit should work with a little trimming as well.

So on this post I'll skip all the writing and wordiness that my normal posts consist of.

Figured out why the fuel pump wasn't activating, the wire I used as my constant hot for the PCM turned out to not be constantly hot....oh well, cleared that up and all signs pointed to go. Put fluids in her, and here is the result, enjoy!!

You'll be there before you know it steve, it was a really great feeling to hear her run(and not too bad considering the cam thats in it, I expected it to sputter a little more) for a few seconds. Lot of things coming together to make that happen, wiring, ecm tune for the vats/egr/etc, and fuel.

Only real hiccup I had for the day was that somehow or another, I actually reversed my fuel lines coming from the tank, and I had the feed line from the pump going to the return line for the filter. Didn't take long to figure out, and only a small amount of love on the hardlines to get them switched, and she fired right to life!

Great first start video. I liked how your friend exited the video quickly as he moved away from the car - when she fired up! Sounds great. Did you eventually ripen it long enough to confirm the fans are working as desired?

That was actually my dad, he's about as nervous as they come so he thought it was going to blow up.....

And to answer your question, no I didn't let it run long enough to have the fans kick on. Honestly setting there untuned open header I figured I'll wait until I'm a little further along.

Sounded like it ran pretty well for not being tuned and having that cam.
