2004 MSM to a 2004 GTO

Hey guys I’m at it again, I had to do some convincing with the wife but she let me build another miata. These things are just to much fun so Ive got some intitial pics to post and more to come with the build later. I have been working on it since August 2018.

Abs is making me nervous but I’ll figure that out later i think im going to have to get a smaller brake line for the passenger side front brake

Cleaning the engine gettin ready for the test fit
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...4f822c5f4.jpeg
First test fit went good.... but you have to remember this is my second build so I am familiar with how much room I needed. This is the passenger side firewall and cylinder head not much clearance with the V8R subframe. FYI

Heat shields

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...43f1349df.jpeg
Me a student of mine worked on a heat sheild for the engine mounts but I didn’t have a box break that would work with the having a long side. So i ended up buying FM sheilds anyways. Booo 70 bucks

Starter

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...daf661623.jpeg
Stock GTO starter is too close to the headers so i ordered a 09 LS3 Starter from my local Battery shop for $150 good deal i felt. The new starter ends about where the black part ends on this starter

GTO shifter

FM Radiator with factory fans

Factory miata fans with the FM radiator. I had to modify the fan hosing a small amount but holly smokes what a good fit.

FM sway bar not fitting

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.v8m...8337b9646.jpeg
Flying miata Sway bar not fitting eeek. I had to drill the factor sway bard mount a 1/2” forward on the front holes then the bracket that comes with sway bar will slide forward enough to not rub the dampener

Cool build ! Looks like fun !

Man it looks like you're moving right along on it. I have thought it would be fun to build another one some day as well, just because.

Me too.
Doing one just whets the appetite to do another with some variations on the drivetrain specifics.
It might make some purists shudder but I am considering doing another with the focus on 1/4 mile performance.
Always loved those V8 Vegas and think a Miata could scratch that itch.

To the OP concerning the fuel pump wiring;
I am looking to educate myself.
Could you go into a bit more detail on post #15 where you mention wiring running the wire out of the Miata pump relay an into the GM harness relay?
Will you have 2 relays in that line or are you bypassing the Miata relay in favor of the GM harness relay?

stng_96 01-11-2019 02:45 PM

There were just soooo many things I was afraid of when I built mine. If I had mine to do again I would be doing a turbo car.

So I pulled out the wire from the relay where power would have come from the Miata harness to the fuel pump and hooked the power out wire from my fuel relay on my gm fuel relay. I had my gm harness reworked by Lsx specialties and he put a dedicated fuel relay for this purpose. I just didn’t have to run the wire all the way back to the fuel pump I used what Mazda had already ran for me. You can also use the ground signal from the gm harness from the pcm to ground the Miata relay instead.

I believe I originally followed a similar plan using Mazda’s existing fuel pump wiring. But after an issue with a short-lived hi-performance pump, I installed a 2nd relay with fat wires to feed power to the replacement pump. I have peace of mind now as it sounds stronger than the first.

Glad and to have you here posting up and taking us along for the ride!! Pretty car too.

I don't think the miata harness was the cause of your pump failure. The pigtail that comes with the pump is smaller gauge wire than the power wire from the Miata relay.

Flavaquero 01-12-2019 05:49 PM

I ran an 8 ga wire from the gm relays inthe fuse box (gmpp kit) all the way to the pump, bypassing all the Miata relays. Hope it works.
