Default Ford 7.5 diff cover

How tough is it to pull the cover off the 7.5 with Martin’s rear hanger? Doesn’t look like there’s enough space there. Or rather, it looks like MAYBE it could slide out the bottom, but no way it could slide back in keeping the sealant where it’s supposed to be. 8.8 setup is different so need experience with 7.5.
Am looking to do a fluid change and check ring gear lash on a V8 Miata
Cheers.

Hi Brad,

I think you will need to drop it off the hanger. I wouldnt persist with it still in the car.

You know it needs to come out

How is the car running these days ? Its been a while..

Cheers

Hi John,
I really hope I don’t have to drop the whole pumpkin. Axles and all would have to come out. Kinda a pain in the but.
Car is running really well. I still get a wee bit of jerking at low speed that is often accompanied by a clunk noise. I think it is driveline slop. Would like to check ring gear lash as I can turn the driveshaft a good bit by hand.

Hi Brad,
I think you will find that it is not the diff that has that slop in it but the T5 transmission. I have the same thing in my car with the T5. I had the diff rebuilt and the transmission rebuilt and the slop was still there. The differential will only have 12-15 thou clearance on the crown and pinion so it will be minimal movement, The amount of movement you have (like mine) is from the transmission. This then causes a clunking or trailer hitching type of thing at slow speeds (if the car starts bucking)..its very rare but when it happens its annoying, because it gives you the feeling like the transmission is loose.
I am unsure exactly why the T5 is like that as I dont have a spare one on a bench to see where the "slop" is actually coming from.

As a result I am in the process of getting the parts together to upgrade to a TKX transmission. I would have done it from the beginning, but iit was either TKO or T5 at the time of my build...and a T5 seemed like an easier option. But as I have had to change synchros twice in the T5 in 40K miles, I am not going to persist with it anymore.
I am pulling the engine out to do some upgrades and I will put the TKX in it on assembly.

The TKX is a cracker transmission from all reviews. It probably just needs a better shifter. But I will let you know how I go with it.

Hope that helps...what you are getting on that video looks normal to me. Its crappy but its normal. Mine does exactly the same and has done so since day 1 when all was new.

Cheers,

Hi John,
I think you’re right, I was under the car today playing with driveline angles and had the driveshaft disconnected. The diff pinion barely moves. All that play is in the T5. Bugger.
How’s the TKX swap going? If that solves the issue I may follow your lead on that.
Cheers. Brad
