Yes, there is a plate between the WP and timing chain cover.

seems like the pump pulley bolt pattern (the 4 bolt holes) is different for the two types of pumps. The reverse rotation pump has a larger bolt circle than the old standard rotation pump (or visa versa). So if you have a stock "standard" pulley bolted on it should be a "standard" pump. I think some aftermarket pumps have both bolt patterns on them and can be used either direction. For the life of me though I can't see how those flat vanes work any differently in terms of which direction they turn...

Pump Flow

Mike,

I guess you have to be an anal engineer, lol Seriously if my memory is correct, an open impeller zone like the pic I posted is designed to turn with the flat face of the impeller, with this type of open chamber pump you can indeed rotate the opposite direction, in fact F0RD did just that. If I remember correctly its a 17% reduction in flow to turn the opposite direction. However, not all pumps are equal, some have an internal scroll that only allows them to turn in one direction such as the cardone 55-23115, even calls it standard rotation which is tricky, but yes standard for that year, which is reverse rotation or CCW. Make sure if you want CW rotation that the pump states CW rotation.
As to the pulley bolts I agree that the new pumps have a different mount pattern for CW vs CCW, generally, but again not all is what it appears, there are exceptions, just cant think of the model off hand.

This is a great pump too, Water Pump CW rotation Edelbrock 8843, but pricey not sure of pulley bolt circle.

F0RD and Water pumps, This will test your F0RD knowledge, using a stock Bell, bolt a C4 auto to a 460 BB..how? it can be done..

Happy that 5.0 Miata has found a solution, now just the waiting to get the parts

So, here is the culprit. Yes, sure does look like a CCW rotation to me. I had to look at the picture a couple times in my head but, it would be scooping the coolant, not pushing. I should have looked before I put it in!! Ughh!! Oh well, should be good as new tomorrow after work, maybe even get a little test drive in as well. (I think the clutch still needs a little adjustment)

Nailed it

The above pump is a scroll type meant for CCW rotation only.

So the Edelbrock 8843 was a wash... I did not clear the thermostat housing and the bolts were of different length compared to the previous pump. I don't get that, it is supposed to be a direct fit. Oh well, I believe I have the correct one in hand now cardone 55-23121, I'll give it a try tonight afterwork.

The Edelbrock is a serious pump, 4.4" impeller, wants to be on a engine with a highrise

The above pump Cardone 55-23121 I believe is the same as the pump that you just removed that is CCW, Try this pump

Cardone 55-23150 for 83 Mustang 5.0 Manual steering or the HD upgrade Gates 43264.

look up 83 Mustang 5.0, Manual Steering if asked, and opt for the HD unit with a 3.5" Impeller.

This will work, I promise.lol

Let me know how the 55-23121 pump works out, pull the backer plate and have a look before bolting up!!
tell me good news.

Okay, done! All put back together, I will let the gasket sealer set up over night. When I get home from work tomorrow I'm pretty sure I will be in business. I checked the impellers and this is the correct one. Sorry didn't take a pic, but trust me, it's the right one.

The next issue was as Mike stated in an earlier post. The bolt pattern for the pulley is incorrect. I used a water pump shim kit that had both bolt patterns and drilled out the smaller bolt holes and it bolted up perfectly. Very close to perfect, I'll have to check it when it's running to make sure it's true. I did have a March underdrive pulley that I could have used but it doesn't fit with the monster kit modified crank pulley.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure everything will be a go tomorrow. Thanks for all the info.

All is right with the world... hasn't gone over 208 degrees and then cools to 203. The EFI is still has some learning to do but, it is getting better...

Great News

Glad we could help you with your project, Just wanted to verify you did install the Cardone 55-23121 Water Pump for CW rotation. Want to add this to my list of F0RD Pumps.

Thanks and great trouble shooting, time for some :3gears:

If it helps anyone I'm running a regular rotation pump backwards atm because power steering bracket is out of alignment. More of a temporary fix but it regulates temp fine (haven't been stuck in traffic after a long drive or other extreme conditions).

x2. mine is an 88 block, fox timing cover, 89 crown vic pump, smooth pulley drilled to fit. march performance alternator bracket

We've done this now with two cars using the earlier pump and the later non-ribbed pulley with the holes elongated. Nether has had any issues. The one actually lives in Arizona and frequents Laguna Seca. I'm pretty sure any issues would have shown up by now on that particular car.

Since this subject is current again, is there a water pump for the sn95 type i can use without having to use my dummy pully setup? I'm not runni g PS or AC so I had to mount a pully to the drivers siide head to keep my WP turm CCW. So I gues I'm looking for a clockwise pump for the shorter front dtive.
