Speedometer

I'm putting a Ford 5.0 and T5 trans in a 2001 NB Miata. The 2001 doesn't use a mechanical speedometer cable. My T5 trans is new and didn't come with the speedometer sensor. The speedometer sensor looks like it has both a digital/electrical connection and a mechanical cable connection on the same sensor. What do I need to do to connect the speedometer?

Hi,

The NB has a signal generator that send an electrical signal to the speedometer cluster. There are 2 ways to do the NB signal generation. Using a 2 wire analog "saw tooth signal" style signal generator or a 3 wire digital "square wave" signal generator. I strongly recommend the three wire unit as the signal is smooth and will not have the speedo oscillating whilst it droves around teh face. Its subtle but its there. Bosch make the 3 wire unit and it fits straight into the hole for the T5.

Also you will need to get the Dakota Digital speedometer interface to get it to work. feed the 3 wire Speed sensor into the Dakota digital unit and then send that signal to the instrument cluster wire to drive the speedo.

The Dakota digital unit will allow you to perfectly calibrate the speedo to a gps speed reference (on your phone). Thereby making it dead accurate.

Cheers,
