SN95 Cobra Engine & Transmission

3 Attachment(s)
I've been looking for quite a some time now - well, not really - maybe just a month or so….

Anyway, I found a 95 Cobra engine & transmission with 86K miles a couple of hours from me so I went and picked it up Tuesday of this week. I got the complete wiring harness, including the ECU. Next step will be to get it up on the engine stand and teardown for inspection. I am a little upset I had to buy it with the transmission, but the PO was unwilling to separate, so I bought everything.

As I am sure you are aware, the T5 is a 3.35 1st gear and my investigations have found there is NO 2.95 retrofit for these transmissions (called D&D performance). So, the question remains - do I use this transmission and go with either a 2.73 or 3.08 rear differential? The 3.27 most often used will not work as 1st gear would be similar to a truck "granny" gear. The other alternative is to sell this unit and buy a new 2.95 transmission.

I am thinking I should go with what I've got and look for a 3.08 rear as this is what came standard with the Mustang GT/Cobra cars. I am sure tire diameter plays into the equation a bit, so I haven't calculated that aspect of it, but the consensus seems to be that you want to keep your 1st gear ratio (1st transmission gear size X rear diff size) to 9.5 as anything greater would be overkill for the street (not planning on tracking the vehicle).

The prevailing standard setup seems to be a 2.95 trans with a 3.27 rear = 9.6465

If I go with a 3.08 with my 3.35 transmission = 10.318

If I go with a 2.73 with my 3.35 transmission = 9.1455

So, what would be best for drivability and overall fun factor?

BTW, here is what I picked up Tuesday:

Note: I probably won't be able to use these headers…..

Call these guys about your transmission: Southern Gear Co. - The Standard Transmission Professionals. I am sure that they can get you what you need to convert what you have or rebuild it for you. There is NO WAY that I would install a used t-5 in anything without taking it apart first & inspecting/replacing its contents. Same goes for your engine, especially if you have not heard it run. You will want to eliminate those underdrive pulleys as well.

Very nice looking package. I would guess you will be quite pleased..Not often I have seen such a complete set up without buying the whole vehicle...Great Find!!

I don't believe the shop you went to. The difference between the '94/5 transmissions and the '87/'93s is the bellhousing and length of the input shaft. The internals for a 2.95 cluster should drop right in that tranny no issues. The clusters should be identical actually. The changes are all forward of the transmission front seal not behind it.

I'm using a '94 GT as my donor. I have both bellhousings in the garage. I'm not sure which bellhousing I will use the early one with a spacer or the '94/5 one, but I'm keeping the longer input shaft to move the tranny further to the rear and better match the shifter cutout. I will need an even shorter driveshaft though.

Have fun.

The problem is the input shaft for the 94/95 has that extra 5/8" length too and they do not make it for the 2.95 setup.

Not sure what he paid for it but I saw it on craigslist locally advertised for 1800.
