Coil On Plug Small Block Ford

1 Attachment(s)
I've got this setup running on my '67 Mustang and debating on duplicating it on the Miata.

OK so it is coil "near" plug as in LS coils. I'm using a FAST XFI computer with their XIM module to run the spark. 36-1 wheel on crankshaft with an Explorer pickup and an Explorer cam synchronizer. I love not having that distributor on there! Engine is running full sequential on injectors and not wasted spark.

Getting it to a dyno tuner in a couple of weeks

VERY COOL! I'm in for the dyno results. And Yep, I can see that setup being a natural for the Miata.

Very nice. I have delusions of doing something similar with this intake:

That intake is awesome. My only concern with it is there is no idle air control/bypass valve? You have to "modulate" the throttle till it warms up?

I'm kind of a Megasquirt fan; one of their solutions for IAC is the Ford PWM valve, I intend to adapt it to the intake. There is a large-ish plenum cast into the floor of the intake, with some ports already there for a good vacuum source, but I plan to attach the IAC valve directly to that plenum with an o-ring seal to the downstream side and a separate line to a small intake filter. Should work. We'll see.

One of the hidden benefits to this or any intake other than the original Ford design is a significant reduction in weight. Your solution does that as well. I have 302s and LS engines in the shop, the difference in intake weights blows me away.

Again, nice job.

Mike

Where do you find an intake like that? Actually I'd like to know the details of the COP set up too. Looks very nice.

I saw one of those 8 stacks on ebay last week. They wanted $2K for it.

I found this place looking for an alternative Eight Stack Injection- 289 302 347 Systems

Took the Mustang to the Dyno. Rear wheel horsepower made it to 376 and torque was (coincidentally) 347. Ran it up to 7,200 RPM and pulled all the way there.

Tuner is telling me the slicks take out 20 horsepower (rolling resistance) compared to drag radials and my torque converter (Hughes 8 inch 4,500 stall) is not putting enough load on the engine. He estimated flywheel horsepower based on data log detail at 510 and wants me to replace the torque converter.

Overall I am happy with the results. As a direct comparison to the carburetor setup, this configuration made 20 more HP and torque which came in much sooner.

Note the dark spot on the under side of the hood. Yup... Backfires from the old carb setup with a little flame to burn what is left of the old paint! No more of that!

This is where I got mine:

Ford SB 260 289 302 Windsor Downdraft EFI Stack Intake Manifold System | eBay

I have it disassembled to add the IAC valve and I'm turning the throttle bodies around so the injectors shoot directly at the valves rather than the intake wall.

I would like to see more details of the COP (CNP?) setup as well. I have the parts from an Explorer to do EDIS8 but there's not a lot of room for the 4 post coil packs

Thanks, Mike

The setup I'm using basically thinks it is a Ford "mod motor" with the 36-1 crank wheel and the cam synchronizer. the FAST XIM module is running the spark with its dip switch settings on mod motor selected.

I had a Mega Squirt running it for a while with the Extra card in there driving the LS coils. My tuner refused to mess with the Mega Squirt... And I was having trouble tuning it myself but when I was converting it to the FAST system, I found I had not connected the cam synchronizer signal return properly so...

Never seen a set up like that... but I am not that in-touch with motors, just have a passion for cool cars.

Seeing the distributor has always bugged me also, big time !

Any chance you can share part numbers, years, descriptions of the components needed to duplicate your CNP, Intake, and electrical(computor needed) to run this set up for a motor challenged individual like myself ?

So clean compared to the stock 5.0 !

Yes Mike, can you share where your intake came from? Any special TB? I like your distributor-less setup. I think a hot SBF with your intake manifold fed cold air by a LS Vette fresh air intake (a la FM) would be the bomb.

Thanks Mike

Pat

V8MiataMike 01-04-2019 07:25 AM

Pat, the intake is a "knock off" Edelbrock single plane Air Gap for a carburetor. It had the bosses already there to drill the injector holes for a port injection setup. It is an Edelbrock low profile intake elbo with an LS type 92mm throttle body.

Thank you Mike, much appreciated. I love that sound of your Mustang on the dyno.... badass for sure! Kudos!
What injectors did you use?

Pat

V8MiataMike 01-06-2019 08:42 AM

Thanks. I am not sure of the manufacturer on the injectors. Most likely Ford though. Currently they are 36lb flow rate.
