Can your smog pump go bad?

Just wondering as put everything back on. My smog pump does not turn smoothly. Is that normal being a pump and all?

Yeah, they do freeze up, especially if bypassed. The one on the engine that I bought was frozen solid.

Get rid of the smog pump.

if I get rid of the smog pump. Will I be able to pass emissions?

after some reading on here, I realize that passing emissions should not be a problem.

Here in Georgia, it just has to have converters and pass the sniffer test and gas cap test. Luckily, mine is old enough to be emissions exempt.

Jim - No smog pump on mine and passed Ontario emissions- which are less stringent for an engine changed car. Have an extra Speed density computer if you need it as I changed to mass air this year. Runs and idles better. Vic

I figure I will probably have to go mass air route eventually.
Im going to get rid of the smog pump. What all can I remove with it? Also where do I get vacuum from for the brake booster?

MX-Brad 08-29-2018 10:46 PM

All vacuum comes from the upper manifold. Make sure to keep the little check valve in the existing Miata rubber line.

where did you connect the brake booster. I have a vacuum line coming out the front of the upper manifold. Not sure where it is to connect.

There should be a bunch of nipples to attach vacuum hoses to. FPR, brake booster, evap and other emissions use vacuum.
The Mustang may have had a vacuum tee mounted on the firewall, but you don’t necessarily need it as the plenum should have an abundance of nipples. I had to cap some of mine off as there were more than I needed even without the tee.
My brake vacuum hose is attached directly to the upper plenum where the tee normally attaches.

Here’s a good pic towards the bottom of the page.

Thank you. I will be getting into that next week. Getting close to trying to start it.
