351 in a Miata?
 

Just a Quick thought has anyone ever tried a 351? Will this work or not? I belive all the 302 parts are fairly interchangable. How much larger are these? I have a friend running a 351 carb set up with TFH 205's making over 500hp also the blocks are good up to 800hp I have been told.

I saw this thread that jason was mentioning hood and header clearance but if I custom made headers and cowl or cut the hood this would work. Also would it work with martins sub fram and pan modificaitons?

But in reference to physical sizing, 351W is 1 inch wider and 1 1/2 inch taller,
and 85 pounds heavier due to larger rotating assemblies with "beefier" bottom end.
Interchange,
intake- no, wider head spacing
heads-lots of variables, cc size, head bolts size and number, valve size,
Crank-no mains and rod journals are larger

Surmise you did mean the 351 Windsor rather than the 351 Cleveland. Not much of anything on the C will interchange. BUT, one can rework the C head (with large valves) to fit a Windsor. However, the under hood space of miata with v8 conversion looks pretty cozy with Windsor head.

351 w looks close not much size difference. Would be nice to have a stock block that can hold easy 800hp

351 stock block will not hack 800 HP from what I know.

Besides, I dont think old school 351 produced much more than 300 rwhp. You might be able to spin the motor to 8k, but i dont see 800 hp on a stock block with bolt ons.

I would still girdle the block etc and shoot for 450 HP max to stay safe.

with 950 carb and twh's my buddy is putting down over 700 408 stroker. Was there when he dyno'd his mustang.

I made 660 rwhp on a stock block, 306....

Naturally a 351w is stronger than a 302 and the '74 and earlier castings are claimed to be even stronger that some of the post '75.

Grenading is a risk you take when you exceed the stock specifications, rev high on a shitty block and shitty parts not meant to spin that high.

Anything is possible but if you want to not grenade and ruin everything either build it right the first time or build it safe.. unless of course you have liquid cash.

450 HP at the wheel. maybe 5&change...
