SOLD - Selling my Monster! - SOLD
I have decided to fix it - then sell it.
Please ignore the rest of the posts in this thread. |
You really should put the info and photos in the post rather than the link. So why are you selling it?
|
Disclaimer: I am not the seller, but a good friend of the seller, please respond to the seller in the first post on this thread :D
The seller is a straight forward, tell it like it is type of guy. I have driven and been driven in this car, it is truly turn key, get in, drive it across the country if need be at a moments notice.

The car also has a big brake kit (Wilwood brakes with 4 piston calipers up front and RX7 brakes in the rear). The sway bars, shocks and springs have also been upgraded. The suspension is still 100% Miata with upper and lower control arms front and rear with height adjustable Bilstein coil-over shocks. There is also a very sturdy track legal roll bar installed. The car looks stock but it draws a LOT of attention at car shows. Whenever I pull it into a car show the car gets surrounded by the time I can get the hood up. The sound is fantastic! It runs great and still handles like a Miata. This is NOT a car for an inexperienced driver! It will break the tires loose in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears! This really is a VERY fast street legal race car. It is ready for a new home! It would cost over $20K to replicate this car. $14,000 OBO. |
damn. much better condition than mine. =(
|
Let me add that it has a new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and clutch fork. Also has a new battery (bigger than stock).
I'm selling it because my wife hurt her back a few months ago. We have 3 cars she can't get in and ride in let alone drive. I've got my eyes on a 1940 Ford Deluxe 4-door sedan but I"m open to trading for any prewar 4 door sedan (with suicide doors). She can easily step up into a car it is low cars she can't get in and out of. If I sell the Monster, I can get the Ford. That still leaves me with the Mazdaspeed Miata and the FFR Cobra. |
So there is a Hollywood FL AND a Beverly Hills FL?
Dyno numbers? I assume given aftermarket heads & ported intake the car has been tuned. |
Bad news...
Last night the engine died. It was running great until it went BANG. All I know at this point is that the starter motor cranks it over, there are no fluid leaks and the distributor is NOT turning. It might only need a distributor but the worst case scenario is it could need a new short block. I'm not fixing it. It is either going to go to the highest bidder or I will donate it to a local technical training institute if I can't get a reasonable offer. I can deliver it within 1000 miles. It is currently strapped down in my enclosed trailer ready to roll. I think $1.00 per mile (one way miles) is very reasonable fee to deliver the car. Of course, car and delivery would have to be paid for in advance. I'll let the Miata forums have first shot at it - then I'm going to list it on ebay. |
Here are some pictures. I have more if you are interested please let me know.

Steve, didn't you have an issue with your Cobra where the pin holding the gear on it broke?
Don't dump it........ Could it be that simple, why not yank it out and see.... Bill S. |
Bill,
It is time for it to go. |

I'll take $8500 but not interested in any swaps. I am selling the car for a down payment on a new car.
|
If I had it liquid, and I could do it under the SWMBO radar, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Bill,
SWMBO wants it GONE! She just found out last night how much money I have in it. If it was up to her it would be heading to a crusher. |
Sorry for your troubles with the car Bill. GLWS!
|
Did it sell or is the craigslist link just wacky?
I'm sure you know, but the problem is either the pin in the gear (like mentioned above) or worse, somebody put the wrong type of gear (bronze, melonized, cast, composite..., depends on what gear is on the cam) in and it is now in a million little pieces. |
I'm fixing the car - then putting it up for sale.
|
I hope you will let us know what the problem was. Nosy minds need to know! Really sorry to hear about the malfunction. I hope it wasn't too serious. Thanks.

Jim D. The problem is/was the distributor. The root cause of the problem is unknown. This was the 2nd distributor this engine 'ate'. The first time, I replaced the cam and the distributor. This time, I'm replacing the short block and the distributor. Not leaving anything to chance that it is going to eat another one. I have no idea exactly why. It was the correct gear on the distributor for a roller cam. I don't know if it was a lubrication problem or if the oil pump required too much torque to turn it. Bottom line is I'm putting in a recently rebuilt short block. Steve |
engine
Sorry to hear that, Steve. That is very unusual. All I could think of would be the front cam bearing not providing enough oil to the dizzy gear. I had an oil pump twist a stock shaft once. How many miles did you get from the engine before the 'big bang' ? Did it break the block? Sorry for being so nosey-just curious. I'm a sbf guy at heart. Thanks.

Jim,
I've only put about 5k miles on the car in total since I bought it. The first time it failed at about 2000 miles. I drove it to the Mitty in April and put about 1000 miles on it during the trip. When I got back I put it for sale on craigslist. That is when this happened. Steve |
I'm glad it didn't happen while you were away. Goes to show how fragile things can be.
Still very interested in finding out what happened. Thanks. Jim D. |
I bought this car and have been extremely pleased with it. I just drove it to Barber Motorsport Park in Birmingham last week end and had a blast. Its a great car.
I'm writing here to close the loop on a few questions asked. From what I understand, the cause of the previous issue was that the motor ate the distributor gear. It has a new shortblock and a different distributor in it now. To answer the question about dyno numbers....well, I added two catalytic converters to the car before I Dyno'd it so I don't know what it was making previously. The first pull with no adjustments was 252 rwhp. Added some timing and took out some fuel, and it made 270. Things I've done since purchasing the car: New transmission mount New falken azenis rt615k tires Installed Cats and made some minor exhaust tweaks Wired fans in a way that both fans run when up to temp Installed hood vents Installed R package front spoiler and KG works decklid spoiler Painted the calipers and did a little cosmetic dress up in the engine bay Tuned it Driven the wheels off it :) Next mod is a ported gt40 tubular intake...shooting for 300rwhp+ |
