Glad to see there are lots of other folks that believe a big motor in a small car is a good thing. I have learned that Mazda has a bunch of really smart engineers that build great cars, but more power is always good.

I have a 90 Miata with a Stock EFI Mustang 5.0, a 5 speed and all the suspension and differential from a RX-7 Turbo II. I also have a 1980 RX-7 GS with a carbureted 5.0 motor and a 5 speed with all the suspension from a 85 GSL-SE. My son has a V-6, 5 speed Mazda 6 Sportwagon, so I guess we are officially Mazda fanatics.

I am looking forward to the V-8 Miata gathering at the Mitty this spring. It's a great excuse to go to another Mitty - this will be my third.

Wow that's one bunch of fine exhaust notes you have there!! I don't care what the year on your drivers license says anyone building and strapping into cars like you have is not old in spirit!

I'm really excited you are coming to Mitty too! Could I trouble you to post up some impressions of the event from years past for us? Lots of guys have not been and would like to know more about what it's like.

Norotors, I see that you're number 3 on the Mitty list. How'd you find out about the event? Realizing that you've attended before; I mean how did you find out that we were having a get together @ the event? We started the list in Nov.


BTW, I often feel like I'm 80, lol.

Kevin he is high on the list because I grouped them by car and build type rather than by order they committed. I did that when we got our first NC and I wondered what mix we had coming. However in the groups they are pretty close to being in order of when they signed up I think.

Thanks for all the love guys. I am a loooong time subscriber to Grassroots Motorsports and Classic Motorsports magazines - they are the sponsors of the Mitty, so that's how I found out about it.

It is a great event. Lots of old race cars and pleasant gearheads to talk to. Road Atlanta is an awesome track. Long, windy and has some really steep hills. Very pretty, though I am partial to VIR for scenery. VIR is about and hour and half from my house.

Went last year and bowed at the Temple of McLaren - guy had Denny Hulme's M20 Can-Am car. talk about a religious experience - I have read about those cars all my life and this was the first time I actually saw one!

523-LSX-NB - I found out about the Event at the Mitty here on the forum. I think that's what you actually asked. Its that old age thing again.

I am in the process of figuring out why the Miata quit the other day after about an hour on the interstate. I guess something got hot and shut down...?

Any ideas? Another thread?

IDK much about the 5.0 circuits, but, would start w/ fail safe features like over heat or low oil pressure. Could also be fuel pump, distributor issues, lost ground, alternator.

Check your TFI ignition module. They are notorious for failing from heat, and the engine compartment of a V8 Miata is no refrigerator.

Boy is that ever the truth!!! You might want to post this up in the Ford section so more Ford pros will see it.

Mine went one day getting off the highway. Pulled away from a light, put it in second gear, and the engine died.

Keep in mind that you need a special screwdriver to replace it however most auto part stores seem to have the TFI module and the tool in stock.

Sorry about not answering sooner, guys. Thanks for the input. It quit again last week, and I fiddled with some iffy looking coil connections and it fired right back up. I'm thinking it may be the coil or one of the connections to it.

Is the TFI module inside the distributor?

The TFI module is attached to the outside of the distributor housing right below the distributor cap. It has a big, flat, multi-wire connector clicked onto it.

norotors you should post up a thread in either Ford engines or electrical. I think a lot more guys would see it there then in an intro thread. I wish I could help but I'm bow tie guy and don't have a clue...

During my years as a Ford service technician I have seen MANY misdiagnosed TFI module repairs. I strongly recommend that the stator be replaced every time that the TFI module is replaced. They will both exhibit the same symptoms when they start to fail.

I'm also HUGE fan of Rd ATL and, like you, especially VIR. Nothing compares to VIR in my humble opinion - lots of run-off, scenic, big paddock, awesome track, updated amenities, etc...

Also been to the Mitty about 4 times (was there last yr with my just-completed car) and look forward to meeting you there. Please bring your V8M with you!

If you do decide its your TFI module I sell a kit to relocate it which I designed specifically due to issues I had with my 5.0 Miatas:

I was looking at your build thread Toy Snake. I live in the Johnston County part of Garner, so I'm pretty close. Looks like you have a ton of Miata stuff laying around. My biggest issue with mine is the wiring is a bit of a rat's nest. I think it has a 5.0 Mustang harness and a Miata 1.6 harness. Perhaps you could offer some input on cleaning it up? I am not an electrician...!?

Too funny - you and I are 15 min apart! And, I think, I gave this very appealing RX7 some serious thought a few months ago when it was posted on CL..! Glad to see that it's still in the Cleveland, NC area.

We can look over your wiring and see what's going on. I'm no electrician either, but a Mazda wiring diet is doable after printing out the free, on-line Mazda wiring diagrams on 11"x17" paper at Staples. Those help you trace anything and make notes as you go!

May want to wait till after The Mitty to tackle this - unless you got a free wknd or 2 before the event! Hope to meet you somewhere soon! Pat
