What is the most mileage you have got out of your Miata Engine?

The original Engine? I don't know. I took that powerless slug out after about 3000 miles.

Jack, (a quick hijack) how's the conversion coming along. I'm thinking it's about time to drive that baby!

Hijack over.

Are you asking about fuel mileage or engine life (in miles)?

He also didn't take the time to actually read what this forum is about.

Still an interesting question though. The best I saw was with my third build. I kept a stock Mustang cam in it and kept the compression pretty conservative. The upper end was all Ford Explorer. It was able to hit 25 - 28 mpg on the highway and 12 or so city. I thought that was pretty good considering those numbers beat those of a 1991 Mustang in 1991. The car only made about 240 rwhp though.

My current car gets about 14 highway and 9 city. I'm not happy with that aspect of the car.

Others?

My best, 26 mpg on a 300 mile, 65 mph interstate run with fuel mileage in mind. No hypermiling, just a light foot. Average is 15 to very low 20's. Engine at the time was a stock trim 90 5.0 GT engine running a Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock 625 carb and a Summitt MSD box.

I'm curious as to the effect the AFR aluminum heads will have. I'm thinking (for sure) more power but less mpg. We'll see, one day I will get it all back together and on the road again.

WOW that surprises me and is wonderful! Me thinks I may have messed up going with 3.55s. What RPM are you at in that 60 to 70 mph range with the 3.73s?

I had a 3.7 rear and am switching to a 3.27. Best in town was 17mpg and 26 on the highway at between 65-90mph with a sprint or two of 120 in the clear road spots.

Set the cruise at 100 for a couple miles to see what it would do. I can live with 18+!

I can get 20+ on the highway in fifth gear and 2000 rpms. I only drive like that on the way to track event to conserve fuel. Once I get there my datalogs show I get about 4.5 mpg on the track. I get about 12 on average.

I've been told that if I switch to a MS3 from the MS2 I will able to take advantage of actual sequential EFI (the MS2 only has batch injection) and save some mpg's while under 2000 rpms. The MS3 would also be able to detect speed and therefore gear which would allow for all kinds of other speed and gear dependent fuel saving strategies I could put in place.

I get 20 on the hwy cruising 6th at 80. I get 15 any other time. I expect both numbers to improve after it's tuned this week. It smells of raw fuel at sustained lower rpms.

All my calculations are hand calculated at each fill up. I've never had a digital gauge be accurate. I hand calculate every car at each fill up and log it. I use the data for trends as unusual fuel consumption is an early indicator of a problem developing.

Driving the Mariner Blue 91 up from Sarasota,FL to PA last winter SWMBO and I averaged 28mpg at a steady 65-75mph. stock 5.0L engine, WC T5, with 3:27 rear gear set.

It takes about 5 fill ups to dial it in but the gauge is spot on to the note pad and calculator. The average MPG in the shot is skewed up because I reset the average after the autocross a couple days before. Just running back and forth to work that number sits between 22 and 23 and I did record the miles and gallons at every fill for a while to see if it was right.

But the key is the top 2 numbers and they don't look that good usually. That is so close to 14.7:1 AFR its what prompted me to take the photo. Usually those numbers are farther negative (richer) than that because I need tuning work too. I think it was the perfect moment in time with the temp so low, the oil fresh, 91 octane in the tank from the autox and the prior 100 miles all nonstop freeway to make all of those numbers so good. And while the numbers are not normal for me it's good to know that if I put a 2x2 block under the gas pedal they could look like that all the time.

Bought Old Chuck's car yesterday in northern, South Caroline. Stock 5.0L except for an E cam and better valve springs. 3.35 low T-5 transmission should have a .68 overdrive. Tach reading versus tire height versus speed would indicate halfway between 3.27 and 3.55 gears, but I think its a 3.27 with the tach reading about 100 rpm fast.

Drove it 6+ hours to its new home in Florida. No cruise control, not feathering it for mileage, driving a steady 70 mph most of the way, occasionally rolling on the gas to dispatch a dawdling motorist and break the boredom.

I calculated 22 mpg on both fill-ups. However, I ran exactly 60 mph between three mile markers and timed it, calculating the speedometer is indicating 7% slow. So I just realized I actually got 23.5 mpg.

It's hard to have much more fun while getting that kind of mileage!

Hey nice sunshine!! I put an audiovox cruise in mine and I really like it. Actually I use it everyday...

Gator the gauge is an Ultra Guage plus. The plus is a sweet little deal the measures 0-60 and other ETs. There are several things they could have done to make the thing better and more user friendly but over all it's probably the best 70 bucks I spent on the build.
